Spend the afternoon exploring the settler's dwelling and learning about St.

When the US purchased over 400 acres of land in St. David’s in the 1940s, Carter House was preserved, but the family graveyard was relocated to Chapel of Ease. We have docents who swear they weren’t alone in the house, and when the plots were restored, so was the peace.

Every garden has a dark side…
Some of what grows around Carter House could feed you. Some could heal you. Some could put you in the ground. Islanders have known the difference for centuries.
Swipe through to meet the plants. Which is which? 🕯️
For folklore and fun only. Never eat or use a wild plant unless you’re certain what it is. Plant IDs by Brown & Company Ltd., they dig the dirt so we can tell you the secrets

One happy kid from Purvis at Carter House wearing the Spanish Helmet “which was found by Governor Moore in the trees proving to him that the Spanish were here and could come back so he was convinced that the settlers must build forts. He compromised assigning some to growing food and others to building forts…thereby getting the best of both priorities creating protection and sharing food for all as in a true community of mutual support and caring - like Old St Davids”

AND Carter House Family Christmas is on SUNDAY 29th NOVEMBER 3 to 6pm

Generations interpret history through different lenses, and these perspectives can give us new insight into something old. At 13, our youngest docent, Dalia, shares her thoughts on the history and character of Carter House. About the Settlers’ Cabben: “I don’t know what it is about it but I just love the way the houses used to be structured and the fact that we have a literal house in our front lawn.”

Larry Mills teaching P4 children the concept of Bartering in Bermuda the first 100 years when To***co was the major currency.
We have the original Spanish to***co (Orinoco) growing at Carter House, the same the Sea Venture castaways found growing here in 1609 and that John Rolfe took to Virginia which financially saved the Virginia Company …another unique “exhibit” at Carter House

The exquisite beauty of the night blooming Cereus, - symbolizes fleeting beauty, transience, mystery, and patience. The bees are no fools they are all in there in a second - how do they know that this bonanza lasts only hours. The paradoxes of nature - the soft beauty and power, the complexity and simplicity; the resilience and fragility - never fails to impress. The beauty of nature is everywhere - you just have to notice. Quiet contemplation of these wonders produces awe, and deep understandings or “feelings”….”The richness of life is learning how to feel” (Solomon Hayes)

Some things don’t Change (like the enduring values of the past). Carter House approximately 100 years ago and yesterday. One thing surprised me was the small roof beyond the 2 tiny tanks and the room below housing the pump, stairs and bathroom was already there 100 years ago when I always thought the US Base added that. Must have been Howard Smith who lived above in the house which is today sadly a ruin. 67 % of all Lillie production was in St Davids including Carter House, then Southside farm of 9 acres just above Carter’s Bay now runway and Channel House - most things do change
