TRIBUTE

“My cancer diagnosis lifted a veil from my eyes, and a brilliant Truth radiated flawlessly over everything. The things I spent my life focusing on were relegated to the shadows; the once sharp edges of the notions of success, acceptance, and wealth obscured. They stayed on the other side of the veil, causing me to nearly float away as the weight of unimportant things vanished from my shoulders.”

Written by: Angela Firman

Sadly Angela passed in 2025 from metastatic breast cancer. She wrote her essay “Beyond the Veil” after her first diagnosis, before the recurrence. This is a small snippet. Drained : determined: The Different Faces of Breast Cancer

“The devastating news came via a phone call…

“The poor nurse who called me was hesitant. But I asked if it was what I thought it was. I didn't want her to say the C word. She confirmed this... I shouted and screamed and cried as I knew my life was now going to change.”

“My treatment plan was six rounds of chemo every 3 weeks.”

“I still struggle with fatigue and breathlessness… I firmly believe that my stubbornness and refusal to give in has helped me enormously. Coupled with the great help from my husband and kids.”

“I have told cancer that it is not welcome.”

SHADOW OF MYSELF

“I have remained positive throughout my journey, I didn’t care about loosing my hair, I faced the chemo head on and I refused to throw myself a pity party.”

“I think because I remained so strong throughout the journey the trauma has caught up with me… I’m terrified that the cancer will come back and feel like I’m living under a shadow, I feel like a ticking timebomb, and have terrible survivors guilt.”

“Should I just be grateful and shut up, I feel guilty for feeling this way when so many women are still going through it.”

lost : legendary: The Different Faces of Breast Cancer

“My 30th year was always going to be my year of travels, of life, success and love. So when they told me I had cancer my world fell apart.”

“It took away a huge part of me and really knocked my confidence, but deep down I knew I could still be that bubbly girl who embraces each day.”

“When I went into remission it took me months to realise that crying was ok, that it was ok to grieve for a part of me, emotionally and physically, that I’d lost. I don’t have the same body I had before, I still have monthly injections and daily pills, and at times I still feel slightly lost. But now I can start to rebuild my life and think about my future.”

APROPOS…

Les Nanas aux pouvoir, ca. 1970

A symbol of feminine strength - joyful and rebellious, powerful women.

Embodying femininity in all its diversity, breaking with traditional representations of the female body.

Behind this explosion of color and vitality lies a profound rebellion…

Questioning the way bodies are viewed, demands the freedom to exist outside imposed frameworks, denounces systems of exclusion… an invitation to think differently about the body, gender and social norms.

Proactive : preventative: The Different Faces of Breast Cancer

“For about 6 to 8 months I had been getting pain in the left side of my left breast. I had put it down to overstretching and age related wear and tear.”

“Within 3 days of the mammogram I had a letter to attend further screening. I had a biopsy done and had to wait for the results. I knew I had cancer (just a gut feeling).”

“I didn’t notice anything obviously wrong about my breast. Or see anything unusual about it… it would not have been discovered without the routine mammogram that I had.”

“Get your mammogram… And if you notice anything unusual get it checked out.”

FACING REALITY

“People think once we have had chemo, radiation & surgery the hard part is over.”

Survivorship is a continuum and does not stop after the bells chime and the embraces of loved one’s cease.

During survivorship care, your focus shifts from active breast cancer treatment to your long-term health and wellness.

We pay homage to all those currently going through treatment, on the road to recovery or who have sadly departed. We will continue to commit ourselves to the empowerment of men & women in the on-going fight against Breast Cancer in Bermuda.

From all of us at PROJECT PINK Bermuda.

transparent : tortured: The Different Faces of Breast Cancer

“Cancer is a challenge, regardless of who you are or what you do. It affects every part of your life. As time has gone by, I’ve felt quite drained and by what is ahead of me. I’m quite optimistic usually, but cancer isn’t just for now. It’s how it will affect your life in the future.”

“When you can, laugh and take time to enjoy the things you’ve been too busy to bother about before. If you need to talk reach out. Support is medicine when you’re feeling low.”

TORTOUS

“I think survivors guilt is very normal?”

“It is a response to trauma.”

“Looking back now I realise that all of the medical treatment I’ve been through, whilst life saving, has actually been quite tortous!”

“Although at the time I just ploughed through, as we all do.”

“Allow yourself the time to do nothing, maybe that is what you need. I had about 3 weeks where I did nothing and stared into space at home and couldn’t get motivated to do anything.”

scared : symbolic: The Different Faces of Breast Cancer

As we step into Breast Cancer Awareness Month there is a profound sense of responsibility to meet the message of breast cancer awareness.

Although there are continued strides in research and technology, those impacted by breast cancer are who we wish to acknowledge this year.

The ‘oxymoron’ of a diagnosis, (scared: fear, anger, stress) against the triumph of survivorship (resilience, joy, grace: symbolic) are synonymous with ‘the different faces of breast cancer.’

‘Davina’s’ story:
“I check myself regularly and go for routine mammograms.”

“After a routine mammogram, I was told that they were concerned about the image on the mammogram. They thought it was cancer. So, I had a biopsy. I felt afraid and shocked. ‘Why me’ I thought. This was awful.”

“Keep positive thoughts in your head. Talk to people, your family and friends. Read information and don’t be afraid to ask questions.”
