Both the Scania R-series 4x2 Tractor Unit and 6x2 Rigid have achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating and CitySafe award in the latest truck safety assessments. 🚛⭐

The R-series scored 76% for Safe Driving, 96% for Crash Avoidance and 80% for Post Crash Safety, with particularly strong performance from its active crash avoidance systems. 🚲

The latest result broadens Scania’s five-star offering across its long-haul range, although Euro NCAP reminds fleet buyers that much of the equipment needed to achieve the highest rating remains optional.

⭐ Scania G-series achieves five stars in both 4x2 and 6x2 configurations ⭐

The updated Scania G-series has achieved Euro NCAP’s highest five-star rating and CitySafe award in both the 4x2 Tractor Unit and 6x2 Rigid configurations. 🚛

The G-series recorded 82% for Safe Driving, 96% for Crash Avoidance and 80% for Post Crash Safety, with near-full scores from its active crash avoidance systems across vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist scenarios. 🚸

Euro NCAP notes, however, that much of the safety equipment required to achieve the five-star result and CitySafe award is optional rather than standard fitment. For fleet operators, ensuring the fitment of the right safety technologies remains an important part of achieving the highest level of protection. ⚙️

The updated Mercedes-Benz Actros F has achieved Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star rating and CitySafe award, improving on its previous four-star result. 🚛

Assessed in both 4x2 Tractor Unit and 6x2 Rigid configurations, the Actros F scored 79% for Safe Driving, 82% for Crash Avoidance and 80% for Post Crash Safety. 🦺

Upgraded driver assistance technology helped improve performance in potentially dangerous situations, including lane departure and cyclist nearside-turn scenarios. Euro NCAP sees the Actros F as a strong all-round option for operators whose trucks divide their time between urban roads and highways. 🛣️

⭐ BYD makes a five-star entrance into Europe’s long-haul truck market ⭐

The new electric BYD ETT 44 has achieved Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star rating and CitySafe award on its first assessment. 🚛

As one of the first long-haul electric trucks tested by Euro NCAP, the ETT 44 scored 89% for Safe Driving, 73% for Crash Avoidance, and 80% for Post Crash Safety. 🦺⚡

Its strong Safe Driving result was supported by excellent direct vision from the low-mounted cab, lower door vision window, and digital eMirrors. Euro NCAP also identified room for further improvement in some active safety functions, including vehicle-to-vehicle and lane-departure collision prevention. 💥

For fleet operators considering the move from diesel to electric, BYD might just have proven itself to be a very good option. 💶

⭐ Euro NCAP awards five-star safety rating to BYD’s new electric truck ⭐

Euro NCAP’s latest Safer Trucks results, published at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, show strong progress in long-haul commercial vehicle safety. 🚛

The BYD ETT 44, one of the first long-haul electric trucks assessed by Euro NCAP, makes a strong entrance with a five-star rating and CitySafe award, showing that the move from diesel to electric does not need to come at the expense of safety performance. Fleet operators considering transitioning from diesel will be carefully weighing up the benefits of both top-tier safety and electric running costs.🔋

Mercedes-Benz Actros F, Scania G-series, and Scania R-series also achieve five stars and CitySafe, while Euro NCAP highlights the importance of fleet buyers carefully checking standard specifications to ensure the highest level of protection is fitted. 🛣️

However, results also show that safety progress is not yet consistent across the market, with the IVECO S-WAY receiving a two-star rating in the Regional Distribution category. ⚙️

⚠️ Euro NCAP calls out to industry: urgent safety updates required to trailers⚠️

Euro NCAP’s latest research, supported by National Highways, Trafikverket, ADAC, and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, reveals serious weaknesses in the rear impact protection fitted to many trucks and trailers in Europe and the UK. For fleet operators, trailer manufacturers and road transport businesses, the message is clear: let’s work together to improve safety through strengthening standards and implementing retrofit solutions. 🚛

Around 400 deaths every year across the EU and UK are potentially linked to rear underrun impacts with trucks. These crashes can occur when a passenger car hits the rear of a stationary or slow-moving trailer and slides beneath it, causing severe intrusion into the car’s occupant compartment. Current rear underrun guards may not provide sufficient protection in these scenarios, even when the car has 5-star crash protection. 🛣️

Euro NCAP’s testing also highlights the need to improve crash avoidance. Some older ADAS and AEB systems struggle to detect real trailer rear-ends in everyday conditions, including motorways, roadworks, poor weather, and low visibility. ADAS systems must be improved to recognise trucks and trailers reliably, while physical rear underrun protection must be strong enough when avoidance fails. ⚙️

Euro NCAP is calling on European and UK regulators to strengthen standards in line with the proven US IIHS voluntary TOUGHGUARD benchmark. Trailer manufacturers and fleets are also urged to support voluntary upgrades and retrofit solutions for existing trailers already operating on European and UK roads. Safer trailers protect drivers, reduce crash severity, and help fleets manage risk more responsibly. 🚚

“The current legislation behind Europe’s truck and trailer rear underrun protection needs to be updated urgently to prevent this type of impact that can prove fatal for drivers and their passengers. The good news is that the solution is already available in the US with the IIHS voluntary TOUGHGUARD standard; the sooner the rear impact guards on Europe’s and the UK’s trucks and trailers are updated, the better, so we can do our job and save lives,” says Matthew Avery, Director of Strategic Development, Euro NCAP.
