⭐🚛 Safer Trucks for Better Business🚛⭐

Trucks don’t just carry goods. They carry risk. Compromise on safety, and you risk lives, liability, and your business. ⭐🚚

From Safe Driving (visibility, driver monitoring), to Crash Avoidance (AEB, VRU protection, system performance), and Post-Crash Safety (rescue information and accessibility), the Stages of Safety framework for the Safer Trucks programme sets a clear benchmark for what five stars really means: zero accidents on the road. 🛣️

At this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show in the UK, Matthew Avery, Euro NCAP Director of Strategic Development, talks to:
🗣️ Mark Cartwright, National Highways
🗣️ Stephen Blackmore, Turners (Soham) Ltd.
🗣️ Phil Rootham, Scania UK
About what a safe truck does for their cause, fleets, and business.

The message is simple: safer trucks, safer fleets, better business. Lower risk, reduced downtime, improved driver conditions, and stronger brand protection start by getting safety right. 💡

⭐ Euro NCAP drives change as more trucks achieve five stars than ever before ⭐

Euro NCAP’s latest Safer Trucks results show clear progress across the industry, with six out of eight trucks achieving the maximum five-star safety rating, more than double the number seen at the start of testing in 2024. Matthew Avery, Director of Strategic Development, presents these results during a presentation on truck safety at the National Highways Driver Safety Theatre, in this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham (UK). Dr. Aled Williams, Programme Director, is also presenting a Commercial Vehicle update in Chongqing, China, at the test facility CAERI, both speakers highlighting how independent testing is driving real-world improvements in truck safety. 🚛

Leading the results is the Scania L-series, delivering an outstanding all-round performance, closely followed by the Mercedes-Benz Actros, Volvo FM, Scania P-series, and MAN TGM, all securing five stars. Each of the tested vehicles was awarded the CitySafe label, a marker of strong performance in protecting cyclists and pedestrians in cities, showing notable and impactful progress in Crash Avoidance technologies across the segment. 🛣️

Alongside the five-star performers, the Renault Trucks D Medium and DAF XD also demonstrated solid progress, achieving four- and three-star ratings respectively, both earning the CitySafe label while highlighting further opportunities to strengthen overall safety performance. An additional five-star rating and CitySafe label was achieved by Scania with a vehicle in the Utility sector.⚙️

“Five five-star trucks in one round of testing is a very welcome record. And it means fleet operators and their buyers have never had such a strong choice of safe trucks in the Regional Distribution sector. But there is a caveat: when ordering a new addition for fleets, buyers need to tick the right boxes for the equipment listed on the datasheet to ensure the best-possible safety. While it might be a slightly more expensive truck initially, it’s a price worth paying to protect your colleagues, other road users, and your brand’s reputation,” explains Matthew Avery, Director of Strategic Development at Euro NCAP. 📈

As Euro NCAP prepares to assess City Distribution trucks later this year, the trajectory is clear: safety is becoming a defining factor in commercial vehicle design and procurement. ✅

⭐ The IVECO S-Way Rigid carries over a two-star safety rating ⭐

Euro NCAP has also assessed the IVECO S-Way Rigid, with its two-star rating carried over from the S-Way Tractor, reflecting similar safety performance regardless of chassis length or axle configuration. 🚛

The rigid variant benefits from the same core safety features, including acceptable direct vision for a long-haul cab and optional camera monitor systems that enhance visibility. Driver assistance technologies such as driver attention monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and speed assistance contribute positively to Safe Driving performance and help prevent rear-end collisions. 🛣️

As with the tractor unit, crash avoidance capability is limited, focusing mainly on front-to-rear vehicle scenarios. The lack of technologies designed to protect pedestrians and cyclists affected the overall score, reinforcing that this configuration is more appropriate for highway and regional operations rather than urban settings. 🚚

⭐ The IVECO S-Way Tractor receives two stars in Euro NCAP Safer Trucks tests ⭐

Euro NCAP has assessed the IVECO S-Way Tractor as part of its Safer Trucks programme, awarding it an overall two-star rating. The result reflects a safety package designed primarily for highway operation, with strengths in longitudinal crash prevention but limited protection for vulnerable road users. 🚛

In testing, the S-Way showed average direct vision for a long-haul cab, with optional camera monitor systems enhancing both direct and indirect visibility. Driver support technologies performed well: the driver attention assist system effectively detects distraction and fatigue, while adaptive cruise control works in conjunction with speed assistance to help maintain local speed limits. 🛣️

However, crash avoidance technologies are largely limited to AEB for front-to-rear collisions with other vehicles, and the absence of systems addressing pedestrian and cyclist protection influenced the overall score. The results indicate the S-Way is best suited to motorway use rather than complex urban environments. 🚚

⭐ The Ford F-MAX secures a solid three-star rating ⭐

Euro NCAP has published new results from its SAFER TRUCKS assessment programme, with the Ford F-MAX achieving an overall three-star rating. The result highlights a mixed safety performance and underlines the value of independent testing in identifying both strengths and areas for improvement. 🚛

Tested as a 4x2 tractor unit in the fleet long-haul sector, the F-MAX complements Ford’s existing presence in the van market. Whilst its direct visibility for the driver is compromised by a high beltline, it features a high-performing Camera Monitoring System, helping drivers’ rearward visibility. Euro NCAP noted that additional technology, such as AEB for nearside turning collisions, would be beneficial and help its safety ratings. 🚚

⭐ The Scania L-series sets the standard with five stars ⭐

Euro NCAP has published the latest results from its SAFER TRUCKS assessment programme, and the Scania L-series Utility Rigid achieves the maximum five-star rating, alongside the CitySafe seal. This recognition is awarded to trucks that demonstrate strong performance in preventing and mitigating crashes, particularly in complex urban environments where vulnerable road users are most at risk. The tested vehicle, an electric version of the L-cab, is part of the utility segment, which covers vehicles such as refuse collectors and other vital service trucks. 🚛

Following rigorous testing, the Scania L-series proves to be an excellent safety-focused choice for fleet and municipal operations. Its low-entry cab and excellent direct vision contribute to a strong 87% Safe Driving score, while a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems supports drivers in day-to-day operations. The truck performs exceptionally well in Crash Avoidance (92%), achieving very high scores thanks to effective autonomous emergency braking and systems designed to detect pedestrians and cyclists, an important addition given that many L-series trucks will be used in urban environments. The electric model also complies with Euro NCAP’s post-crash safety requirements (a score of 80%). 🏢🏙️

⭐ Scania cleans up as its new utility truck sweeps to five stars ⭐

Refuse trucks provide an essential public service, but they can be potentially hazardous to both operators and other road users. Operating conditions that include frequent stops and starts, passing traffic, and people working near the vehicle pose substantial challenges for vehicle manufacturers in designing and delivering safe vehicles. These challenges make it even more remarkable that Scania’s new L-series has swept to a five-star rating in Euro NCAP tests – and earned the CitySafe seal of approval. 🚛🏆

Alongside Scania’s strong performance, Euro NCAP’s latest SAFER TRUCKS results show a mixed picture across the long-haul segment. The Volvo FH continues to set a high benchmark with five-star ratings in both tractor and rigid configurations, combining robust crash avoidance with strong post-crash safety and earning the CitySafe label. Other models highlight where progress is still needed: the new Ford F-MAX achieved three stars, while the IVECO S-Way, in both tractor and rigid form, received two stars, underlining gaps in crash-avoidance performance. Together, these results reinforce the value of independent testing in recognising leadership, exposing shortcomings, and driving continuous improvements in truck safety across the market. 🛣️🚚

“Competition is healthy, and in this case, Scania has thrown down the gauntlet to other truck manufacturers, showing how excellent levels of safety can be achieved through intelligent vehicle design and the availability of sophisticated driver assistance systems. We see many fatal collisions with trucks in our cities. However, trucks are an essential part of daily life. Drivers should appreciate the benefit of this approach from their first time behind the wheel, while fleet operators have the peace of mind that they are equipping their colleagues with the safest vehicle in its class, protecting those around them,” comments Matthew Avery, Director of Strategic Development Euro NCAP. ✅
