Yass Landcare volunteers Alison and Kath welcomed members of the Goulburn Native Plant Society to the Yass Community Centre this month. The discussion focused on the flammability value of a range of our locally grown native plants.

Native plants have a large number of positive attributes in the provision of food and shelter for our visiting and breeding wildlife, the provision of biodiversity, microclimates, and shade in our garden or paddock. The CFA Landscaping for Bushfire resource provides a lot of detailed information on this topic.

If you would like to add some native plants to your extended garden (not close to the house) The Yass Landcare Nursery still has a range of acacias for sale at $2.75 per tube and our next open day will be 27 June.

💧 How much water is left and is it still safe for your livestock?

As conditions dry, both water quantity and quality can quickly become a problem. Early signs to watch for:
🐄 stock crowding around water points
🟤 muddy or fouled dam edges
⚠️ declining water intake
📉 falling water levels.

At the same time, water quality can deteriorate. Salinity, pH changes, nutrient build-up and blue-green algae can all impact livestock health and performance.

What you can do now:
👀 monitor water levels and condition regularly
🧪 test water quality early
🚰 plan alternative water supplies
🌾 adjust stocking rates if needed.

Poor water quality can affect growth, reproduction and overall livestock performance - often without obvious signs.

On Saturday 6th June, Yass Landcare Group's recent Clay Day for Kids was an outstanding success, with many local children joining local artist Sui Jackson for a creative morning of clay making, laughter, and community spirit.

The workshop focused on creating individual pottery pieces that will become part of a larger community mobile to be installed in the garden near the nursery. Working in conjunction with the Yass Men's Shed, the finished artwork will be a lasting community feature that participating children can proudly identify with and enjoy for years to come...

National Reconciliation Week - 27 May to 3 June - reminds us that caring for the land is strongest when we walk together 🌱

Through the NSW Landcare Enabling Program's Aboriginal Partnerships, Landcare groups are supported to strengthen connection with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal/First Nation communities, integrate cultural protocols and knowledge, deepen on-Country learning, and engage in collaborative planning that ensures Aboriginal voices guide how Landcare works on Country.

Over the week we will be proudly highlighting Landcare case studies that show partnership in action. Listening, learning, sharing knowledge, and caring for the land together.

This initiative is made possible by the NSW Landcare Enabling Program, a collaboration between Local Land Services and Landcare NSW supported by the NSW Government.
