- A filmmaker hires an actress to play the part of his murdered friend.

Statement by Filmmaker Benjamin Woodard: I made this film with the hope that it would be challenging to both viewers and myself. For better or for worse I tend to write very self-reflexively, and I thought it would be exciting to push this to the furthest extreme, and make a film where I myself was part of the text. I hoped that this would be a new way to more deeply interrogate some of the ideas I return to (consciously or otherwise) every time I make a short film: the nature of filmmaking, the relationship between the image and the viewer, and the ways in which the bonds between people can become a prison.

WHAT LIFE CAN BE is a short documentary challenging perceptions of disability through Dane's everyday life, love, adventure and ambition. It's a reminder that disability doesn't define the limits of a life.

During NAIDOC Week 2026 Screen Illawarra was proud to host the inaugural First Nations Film Festival; a celebration of First Nations storytelling, creativity and culture from across the Illawarra and beyond.

Over three memorable nights we screened several First Nations shorts and features, and facilitated Q&As with filmmakers at our host venue and community partner the Gala Twin Cinemas.

This festival was made possible with the support of Gawura Aboriginal Corporation IKMSG, Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation, Screen NSW, Invest Wollongong and Culture Bank Wollongong

Our Screen Illawarra Film of the Month for August 2026 is RAD DAD by Gabe McCarthy; a short film about family trauma cycles and redemption as a man confronts his father’s memory to break patterns for his own son.

An intimate Australian drama exploring fatherhood, intergenerational trauma, and the courage it takes to break patterns that have shaped us since childhood. Told through reflective flashbacks and grounded, natural performances, the film follows a man confronting the legacy of his father’s alcoholism while trying to build a healthier future for his own son. It’s a heartfelt story about family, resilience, and the hope that change, however difficult, is possible.

Living with an invisible disability, Jack struggles to embrace his own identity, especially in the workplace. After multiple rejections from potential employers, Jack feels like he has hit a wall, until a trusted friend helps him put the important things into perspective.
Prefer Not to Say is a film about friendship, identity, and learning to embrace one’s individuality.

Director Shaun Foley is an Australian screen, stage and voice actor of 20 years from Wollongong. Shaun has worked on many productions including: NCIS: Sydney, Shang-Chi: and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Remnant, Wyrmwood: Chronicles of the Dead, Devil’s Dust, and Deadly Women, among others. Prefer Not to Say marks his directorial debut.

"When I was eight years old, I was diagnosed with dyslexia. As a creative, it’s something I’ve learned to embrace. That said, throughout my childhood education and early adult working life, it was a word that carried a certain stigma. I experienced firsthand how the label of disability in school and the workplace is often misunderstood as inability.
My experience is far from isolated. Many people with invisible disabilities face similar challenges and barriers every day.
This film was made to bring more awareness to invisible disabilities, to invite discussion about challenging barriers and looking beyond labels, and to encourage people who live with an invisible disability to embrace their individuality."

LudoVic, screening 2.50pm Saturday 15 August , Session 4 -OUR BRIGHT DYSTOPIAN FUTURE

Remember those first few scary weeks of Covid. It was alienating, isolating and terrifying.
LudoVic takes place five years after a virus has wiped out 90% of the population, where we meet Ludo and Dash who have lost their families.
At 18 years old, still children really, alone in a delirious desperate world, Ludo and Dash have no choice but to be street smart and hustle to survive, fuelled with nothing but memories, friendships and music.

Director/Producer Nick Bolton is a filmmaker and actor in Bulli, on Dharawal Country. He was Executive Producer of 'Mate' which was the first Australian film to ever win Clermont-Ferrand and was longlisted for the Oscars in 2023.
He was also EP on Fran Braithwaites film 'Finding Addison' which won the AACTA Best Short film in 2024.
Nick is also the Chair of Screen Illawarra, the peak body for filmmakers in the Illawarra, and will be chairing our panel session with the filmmakers on Saturday afternoon.

Director's Statement: My sincere thanks to Vic Barbeler for creating the story and this unique world and for trusting Jess Milne and I to recreate this world. I hope the film makes you think about ourselves, our world, our relationships and our survival.
