On Thursday last week, Central Coast Rescue Squad - VRA Rescue NSW attended Vales Point Power Station and participated in a multi agency exercise with partner agencies from NSW Ambulance, Central Coast Health, NSW Rural Fire Service - Central Coast District, Tuggerah Lakes Police District, and Fire and Rescue NSW.

The simulation was a transformer explosion with multiple staff with various simulated injuries. Our members were initially tasked with a vertical rescue. Members set up a vertical rescue frame called an Arizona Vortex and lowered the 'patient' from an elevated platform, and into the care of NSW Ambulance. Members then assisted NSW Ambulance with extricating various injured 'patients' using a variety of equipment including our Terra Tamer (wheeled stokes litter)!

All in all, a great exercise with our partner agencies and a great opportunity to practise skills in environments we usually don’t get access to.

Many thanks to Delta Electricity for facilitating!

Rescue on Show!

Today, the Central Coast Rescue Squad had the pleasure of attending the Emergency Services Expo at Wyong Racecourse, meeting members of our local community and showcasing our important work.

It was a great opportunity to have our team and equipment on display, giving the community a chance to see firsthand what we do.

It was a fantastic, family-friendly day, with plenty of emergency services, activities, displays and opportunities to learn more about the people who help keep our community safe.

A big thank you to everyone who came along, stopped by to say hello and supported the event. It was great to see so many families enjoying the day, and we were proud to be part of it!

Over the weekend, three of our volunteers (Joel, Bailey and Chris) were at Penrith Whitewater Stadium competing in the 2026 Australasian Rescue Boat Challenge, hosted by the Australasian Rescue Organisation.

Very proud to announce that Chris won best medic, and the composite VRA Rescue team won champions of safety! Congratulations to all participating teams as well as our colleagues from other squads!

Many thanks to Australasian Rescue Organisation for hosting and allowing us to train and learn amongst other services.

Over the weekend, four of our Central Coast Rescue Squad members travelled down to Belanglo State Forest and competed in Navshield, hosted by the NSW SES Bush Search and Rescue Unit. This event is aimed at emergency services and bushwalkers, to develop and test map and compass skills, route finding, and team work!

Our team competed in the overnight event, clocking up a fair few kilometres and even spending a few hours navigating in the dark! Many great views and lots of cool spots visited!

If this sounds like something you'd like to get involved in, please reach out to us as we're currently taking new membership applications!

Sometimes, rescue means getting in the saddle!

One of our newest members, Eloise, was out representing Central Coast at Mounted Search & Rescue training in Gresford.

Mounted Search & Rescue gives teams the skills and confidence to search challenging areas on horseback, combining horsemanship with essential search and rescue techniques.

The weekend included horse handling and desensitisation training, safety procedures and putting search patterns into practice, all while building confidence and capability in the saddle and on the ground.

And of course, it’s always better with a four-legged training partner! 🐎

Great work, Eloise! We're proud of you!

🪢 VERTICAL RESCUE | WHERE COMMITMENT MEETS THE CLIFF FACE 🪢

There are places where rescue work becomes more than simply reaching someone in need.

It becomes a test of preparation, technical skill, judgement, teamwork and absolute commitment.

These images capture the Central Coast Rescue Squad vertical rescue operators working on a demanding cliff environment — operating on complex rock formations, managing rope systems and ascending terrain where every movement requires concentration and precision.

Behind every metre climbed is hours of training.

Behind every piece of equipment is knowledge of how and when to use it.

And behind every operator is a team that understands that no one goes up there alone.

Vertical rescue requires operators to be comfortable working at height, managing exposure, understanding rope systems, assessing anchors and terrain, communicating clearly and making sound decisions in an environment where conditions can change rapidly.

The photographs also show something that can easily be missed — the amount of preparation that happens before the operator even leaves the ground.

Equipment is checked. Systems are established. Roles are allocated. Safety is considered. Communication is maintained.

Then the climb begins.

For the Central Coast Rescue Squad, these skills aren’t developed for photographs or recognition. They are developed because one day a call may come in for someone stranded, injured or inaccessible on a cliff, rock face or other vertical environment.

And when that call comes, our operators need to be ready.

This is dedication.

This is professionalism.

This is technical rescue.

And this is what happens when highly trained volunteers commit themselves to being there for their community — even when the terrain takes them far beyond the reach of ordinary rescue operations.

Central Coast Rescue Squad Vertical Rescue Team — trained, equipped and ready to respond.
