Why Cowboy Dressage for Trail Riders???

ATHRA is backing Cowboy Dressage because it builds the exact skills trail riders rely on every time they head out: softness, control, confidence, and partnership.

The Cowboy Dressage court gives riders a safe, supportive place to develop those foundations before they’re tested in the real world.

By encouraging this program, ATHRA is helping riders:

• Improve communication and softness, making horses safer and more responsive on the trail
• Build confidence through calm, progressive training
• Strengthen partnership, reducing spooks, surprises, and stress
• Prepare new riders and green horses in a structured, pressure‑free environment
• Lift overall horsemanship standards across clubs nationally

It’s not about competition — it’s about better, safer, happier trail riding.

Cowboy Dressage simply gives riders the tools to get there.

We often get asked..... What is the Difference between ATHRA Accreditation Levels? Here is the answer ....

TRAILBOSS: will have the ability to manage a Trail Ride on behalf of their club and will ultimately be the most senior person present at the ride. Both the practical and theoretical aspects of the course will need to have been completed to a high standard by the member, in order to obtain the accreditation.

Leadership, problem solving, good communication and active participation are essential in fulfilling this role. Capability and safe handling of a horse (catch/secure/tie up/saddle and bridle), to riding at a walk, trot and canter is also essential in addition to:

• Manage a road crossing safely • Lead a horse whilst mounted
• Ride across a creek/river • Negotiate around obstacles
• Assist another rider

RIDE STWARD: will have the ability to work as part of a team and follow instructions from the Trail Boss to assist with the safe supervision and management of the trail ride. Both the practical and theoretical aspects of the course will need to have been completed by the member, in order to obtain the certification.

RIDE COORDINATOR: will have the ability to plan and coordinate a trail ride. A keen knowledge of the Code of Conduct and Ride documentation will be required, in addition to administrative skills to promote the ride and keep accurate records for the club in respect of trail riding activities.

PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be a current ATHRA member, 18 years or older
• Experienced in horse handling and specifically trail horse riding
• Good communication and leadership attributes
• Current first aid certificate (desirable)
