🍩 The residents of the Tocumwal Lions Community Hostel will be enjoying donuts all the time thanks to the new donut machine we recently purchased for their kitchen!

Don't worry, that doesn't mean they're totally retiring their iconic 'Ugly Nuts' 😜

⛪ LIONS NATIONAL CONVENTION: DAY FOUR
And that’s a wrap on the 74th Multiple District Convention here in Adelaide! It’s been a fun-filled four days spent catching up with old friends, forming new friendships, and getting to see all the good things Lions are doing in our communities.

Last night:
💃 It was Gala Dinner night at Adelaide Oval with "Lions, Leos & Legends Under Lights"! The theme for the evening was to wear your team colours, and there were lots of sports and teams on show as we soaked up the atmosphere of the location. It was a fabulous night of fun & fellowship, and just a bit of rivalry among the supporters…

Today’s highlights include:
🎤 The always-inspiring Youth Of The Year National Final - it is always amazing to hear these fabulous young people presenting their speeches and answering their impromptu questions. A massive congratulations to Western Australia’s Isabella Chalker on taking out both the Public Speaking and Overall Winner titles for 2026!

🌏 An invitation to the 2026 ANZI Pacific Forum to be held in Auckland in August - this forum brings together Lions from our Constitutional Area of Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, as well as the South Pacific Islands, to connect and network, much like we have been this weekend.

👑 Welcoming in the new Council of Governors for 2026/7, under the leadership of new Council Chairperson Susan Eyton from southern Victoria. We are looking forward to working with our incoming V6 District Governor Alison Kazenwadel from Wangaratta!

⏭️ An invitation to the 2027 MD Convention in Perth - like Adelaide, Perth missed out on hosting in 2022, so here's hoping we can get across to Western Australia in twelve months' time. It looks like it's going to be a Quokking good time!

👋 And closing with some musical entertainment, getting everyone up on their feet to dance to ABBA, John Farnham, and Peter Allen as we said goodbye to friends old and new!

And that brings a close to our time in Adelaide! Now it's time to hit the road and start our journey back to Tocumwal!

Lions is so much more than just sausage sizzles, and the national convention is a fantastic way to see all the amazing things happening within the broader Lions organisation, and make connections that will last a lifetime. We are already keen to do this all again in twelve months and to meet even more wonderful people in the broader Lions community.

24/05/2026

Can’t make it in person? You can still catch all the action from home! 🎉

The 2026 Youth of the Year Finals will be live streamed today, 25 May from 9:00am (ACST), with the winner announced at 11:05am.

Join us in cheering on these outstanding young people as they share their ideas, experiences and leadership skills on the national stage. 🌟

⛪ LIONS NATIONAL CONVENTION: DAY THREE
It was a jam-packed day today for the penultimate day of the 74th MD Convention here in Adelaide!

Today’s highlights include:
🕊️ A very moving Remembrance Ceremony, remembering those in our Lions family we have lost in the last twelve months.

🏥 Affiliate Professor Jordan Hansford gave a moving keynote address on improving survival and surviorship of children's brain tumors. The goal is to use genome sequencing and other analysis data to help better predict how children who survive brain tumors will progress through life, the developmental impacts they may have, and how future treatments may need to be altered as they age.

🏅 Council Chairperson Richard Williams and other national project co-coordinators presented a number of awards in recognition of dedicated service in a variety of areas. A key moment was farewelling National Constitutional & By-Laws Chairman David Skinner, hailing from our own V6 district, who is stepping down after 27 years.

🏃‍♀️ Lions Sheryl Keppler & Sari-Elle Kraemer gave a presentation about how events and challenges can be used to promote Lions service. Sari-Elle in particular has been using marathon running to promote Lions and raise funds ($174,000 so far) for our various Foundations and projects.

💸 Spotlight: Foundations - a look at the various foundations that Lions operate and raise funds for, including Lions Eye Health Program, Australian Lions Children's Mobility Foundation, Lions Clubs International Foundation, and Australian Lions Foundation.

💙 Our International Director Graeme Wilson, from New Zealand, spoke on his experiences so far in the role, from attending conventions and anniversaries across New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia and the South Pacific, as well as international board meetings around the world. We are crossing our fingers that Australia's own Philip Johnson will be successful in securing the role next.

🇮🇩🇳🇿 Council Chairman Yahya Yastputera, from Multiple District 307 (Indonesia), and Council Chairman Pam Harvey, from Multiple District 202 (New Zealand), shared updates on what Lions have been up to in both of their countries.

🐕‍🦺 Project Spotlight: Lions Assistant Dogs - 25 Hearing Assistant dogs, 6 Medical Assistant (diabetes) dogs, and 10 Psychiatric Assistance dogs were delivered in 2025, bringing the total of active assistant dogs across Australia up to 182.

🎄 Project Spotlight: Lions Christmas Cakes & Mints - A new gluten free Christmas Cake will be available this year (so keep an eye out), and the Mints program is looking at a revamp, with a new confectionary range to be explored (the product teaser looked exciting, so we're hoping it'll come to fruition!).

We are now off to the Gala Dinner - Lions Leos & Legends Under Lights - at the Adelaide Oval! 🏈

And then it's just half a day to go before the end of another wonderful MD Convention!

⛪ LIONS NATIONAL CONVENTION: DAY TWO
It's the second day of the Multiple District Convention here in Adelaide, and there has been a lot of interesting and inspiring speakers and spotlights, as well as plenty of time for fellowship!

Today’s highlights include:
📷 We caught Lions Carol & Coral on the big screen, part of a video showcasing photos of Lions from all across Australia! Tocumwal also featured in the video yesterday morning too, but we weren’t quick enough snapping a photo.

🎤 The national Leo Of The Year final - it’s always so inspiring to hear from the amazing Leo members who are making a difference in their communities and their own lives. Congratulations to New South Wales' Avinash Mohta on being announced as both the Public Speaking winner and 2026 Leo Of The Year! All the of finalists have made great contributions of their communities and all of their speeches were really interesting to listen to.

🇵🇬 An update from the PNG Development Committee - Lions have been in Papua New Guinea since 1962, and there are currently six clubs and two branch clubs. PNG Lions are enthusiastic, but struggle with little resources & overwhelming need, so the Development Committee help Lions to grow in the country. One the major projects has been the Birthing Mothers project, building Bush Huts and providing Baby Bundles.

🇺🇦 A look at part 4 of the Winter is Coming to Ukraine Project - last year, Lions in Australia donated $79,587 towards providing stoves. This year, the project is providing medium diesel generators in the wake of power stations being destroyed.

🫶 Chris Burns, CEO Hutt St Centre, gave an insightful keynote address about supporting people on their journey from homelessness to homefulness. In the 2021 census, 122,494 were recorded as homeless nationally, an increase of 5% from the 2016 census. In SA, that number is 7.428, an increase of 19%. The statistics surrounding why people are homeless and where they end up staying was really eye-opening, and the work done by the volunteers at Hutt St is really inspiring.

🐕‍🦺 Lions Assistance Dogs gave a demonstration on the basic skills and commands that the dogs a taught - walking beside their owner, ignoring distractions, sitting on their mat when out & about, ignoring food (like when out at a café), and sitting & staying. Attendees were then given the opportunity to walk some of the trainee dogs through the course, aided by the dog trainers.

🧒 Spotlight: Youth - A look at the youth opportunities and programs that Lions offer, including Leos and the Leo Advisory Panel, Peace Poster & Essay, and Wheelchair Basketball.

❔ A Q&A session with executives and knowledgeable leaders, with questions submitted during the morning about various topics that Lions in attendance wanted to know more about.

🌳 Project Spotlight: Lions Green Canopy - the aim is to plant 1,000,000 million trees across Australia by 30 June 2027, and so far Lions have planted over 180,000 trees. Lion Jon Dee from One Tree Per Child, which he co-founded with Olivia Newton-John, spoke about their aim to get every child to plant at least one tree before they leave school, and their innovative pairs really well with this Lions project.

🪡 Throughout the day, there is also the opportunity to sew and stuff cushions for the Hear Me Roar! project, which delivers cushions, care packs, sensory toys, port pillows, stoma bag covers, baby bibs & blankets. Or there was making dog toys to provide enrichment for the Assistance Dogs being fostered and in training. Our friends at Kerang Lions Club were busy bees all day at Hear Me Roar! station!

And of course, more exploring of the Expo Hall! Tonight it’s off to the Past District Governor’s dinner before another jam-packed day tomorrow!

⛪ LIONS NATIONAL CONVENTION: DAY ONE
It's officially day one of the 74th Multiple District Convention here in Adelaide, and what a great first day it's been! 🦁

Today's highlights include:
✂️ Official opening by Her Excellency, the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia, and Welcome To Country by Uncle Tamaru. This was followed by an enjoyable flag ceremony, which included the history and details of the featured flags, and the history of Lions in those countries.

🤵 Third International Vice President Tony Benbow OAM gave a rousing keynote address, sharing some of the inspiring projects he's seen Lions undertake as he travels around the globe in his new position.

🤖 Lion Jarrod Kreft spoke about how Lions can utilise AI to help with streamlining admin, assisting with projects, and getting the Lions name and all the good things we are doing out in the world.

👑 An introduction of the current group of District Governors - leading V6 for 2025/26 has been DG Paul Shortis from Wodonga.

🗣️ And the day was rounded out with a hearty business session where delegates voted on the continuation of projects, the adoption of new projects, and constitutional changes.

Plus there was lots of exploring the expo hall, filled with displays promoting the various Lions projects and foundations, and catching up with old friends and making new ones. Now to put our feet up before another fun-filled day tomorrow!

🐕‍🦺 LIONS NATIONAL CONVENTION: DAY ZERO
We're in Adelaide for the 74th Multiple District Convention! And before everything kicks off bright & early tomorrow, we got to witness history today - the sod turning ceremony at the Lions Assistance Dogs National Training Centre as they embark on a major expansion project!

For over 40 years, Lions Assistance Dogs have been providing life-changing assistance dogs - Hearing Assistance Dogs, Medical Alert Dogs, and Psychiatric Assistant Dogs - to Australians in need, free of charge.

This major expansion will see the complex redesigned to better cater for their puppy program and training demands, and will see the number of dogs being trained and delivered increase from 30-40 a year to 120!

We even got to see some of the six-week-old Cavoodle puppies that will one day be providing life-changing assistance - talk about super cute!

It's all-systems-go tomorrow, so we better get an early night to be well-rested for four days of fun, fellowship, and a little bit of business!
