Week 4 of training for our nine newest members. 🚒

Working as two separate crews, today’s training focused on bush fire attack, water supply, main pump operations and communications. The dynamic environment challenged members to coordinate their actions and work together to complete each task.

While we’re still waiting for their PPE to arrive, there’s plenty to learn as they build their skills, confidence and teamwork.

Great effort from everyone, and thank you to our instructors and experienced members for supporting their development.

🔥 EXTREME FIRE DANGER TOMORROW – TOTAL FIRE BAN IN PLACE 🔥

The fire danger rating for tomorrow has been declared EXTREME, with a Total Fire Ban in place.

⚠️ What does this mean for you and your loved ones?

🔥 Know your risk: Extreme fire danger means a fire could spread quickly and be extremely difficult to control.

🏡 Remember your Bush Fire Survival Plan: Know what you will do if a fire threatens your home. Leaving early is the safest option, and you should never wait until it is too late to act.

🚫 Understand the Total Fire Ban rules: Certain activities that could start a fire are prohibited during a Total Fire Ban. Make sure you understand what you can and can’t do before lighting, cooking or undertaking any outdoor activities.

📱 Stay informed: Visit the NSW Rural Fire Service website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au for the latest fire danger ratings, Total Fire Ban rules and advice on how to prepare.

Please take the time today to prepare, talk to your family and make sure everyone knows what to do if a bush fire threatens.

Don’t wait until a fire starts to make a plan. Be prepared, stay informed and keep your loved ones safe.

It’s not just the big flames that are the biggest concern in a bushfire.

Did you know that embers and ember attack are more likely to burn your house down than the fire front itself? 80-90% of house loses in a bushfire are as a result of ember attack.

Embers can travel many kilometres ahead of the fire front so take the time to get ahead of it early and make some simple preparations to your place, to keep you and your loved ones safer this bushfire season.

It doesn’t have to be expensive to prepare your property either.

Today marks the official start of the bush fire season, with the Bush Fire Danger Period beginning in most NSW Local Government Areas.

If you’re planning on conducting a burn, you’ll require a fire permit from your local Fire Control Centre or brigade. Fire permits help ensure fire is used safely and reduces the danger to you, your property and the community.

Residents and land holders must know the rules when it comes to the use of fire. Along with having the required fire permits, you need to notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance.

🚒 Welcome to our newest firefighter recruits! 🔥

This week we welcomed the newest members of our firefighter cohort as they took part in their first training session at Engadine Rural Fire Brigade.

This is one of the biggest cohorts of new recruits we’ve had, and we couldn’t be more excited to see them get started!

Over the next 12 weeks, our recruits will undertake an intensive training program, learning the skills, knowledge and teamwork they need to become operational firefighters.

We’re also incredibly grateful to have such a dedicated team of experienced members putting our recruits through their paces, sharing their knowledge and helping them develop the skills they’ll need to become confident firefighters. 👨‍🚒

At the end of their training, they’ll face their assessments before, hopefully, earning their firefighter qualifications and joining our crews on the frontline.

It’s a big commitment, but an incredibly rewarding one.

The risk of bush fires is returning. After several years of wet weather, grass and scrub has regrown leading to an increased risk of bushfire in your local area.

You don’t need to have bush directly next to your property to be at risk during a bush fire. Embers can travel long distances quickly and start a fire. Previous wet weather has
encouraged bush growth and made it harder to manage. Even if you can’t see the bush make sure you stay well prepared before and during the bush fire danger period.
