Did you know that the Uniting Church in Australia has deep ties across the Pacific? The Pacific Church Leaders meeting in Suva addressed the climate crisis last week by meeting in a Fijian community already facing rising seas. Local voices shared how land is disappearing, food sources are changing, and everyday life is being reshaped by this sharp, lived reality.
For the Church, this is our calling—to stand with our Pacific neighbours, listening deeply, acting justly, and responding with courage in the face of the climate crisis, as part of God’s restoring work in a changing world.
Rev Alimoni Taumoepeau (Team Leader Intercultural Ministry and Climate Action for the NSW/ACT Synod, and familiar to our congregation for his work with Sydney Alliance) was there, highlighting the experiences of seasonal and palm workers—reminding leaders that climate, labour, and justice are deeply interconnected across the Pacific.
Uniting Church President Rev Charissa Suli addressed the gathering, reminding listeners in an area facing rising seas, migration and deep social challenges, that “Jesus meets us where we are. He walks with us… and reconnects us with God’s story.”
