Its Homelessness Week and the theme this year is " Homelessness Action Now " , one action everyone can do is LISTEN ...

In this episode of Beyond Homelessness: Conversations That Matter, we meet Emery, who shares powerful insights shaped by their lived experience of homelessness and the journey of identity within it.

Through their story, we explore the impact of labels, how they can limit, define and sometimes overshadow the complexity of a young person’s identity. Emery reflects on the importance of seeing the individual beyond their circumstances, and challenges us to think differently about how support is offered.

Emery speaks to the need for flexible, person-centred approaches, reminding us that no two young people are the same. Their experience highlights the importance of adapting our responses, listening deeply, and creating space for young people to be understood on their own terms.

Their story challenges us to move beyond one-size-fits-all models of care, and instead build systems that are responsive, relational and grounded in genuine understanding.

Project Youth do an amazing job in the Shire providing support, programs and accommodation services to young people, and educating the wider community about homelessness.
They tell us, "For young people, homelessness doesn’t always look like sleeping on the street. It can look like couch surfing, moving from place to place, staying somewhere unsafe because there is nowhere else to go, or leaving home because of family breakdown, violence or circumstances beyond their control."
