Ep48 Explores aspects of the law system assisting those disabled in Australia; interviewed are those sharing information of benefit.

Nigel Munt represents Aussie Injury Lawyers and, starting off the show, he shares about a little known aspect of everybody’s superannuation – TPD or Total and Permanent Disability, coming into effect when someone is irreversibly harmed or falls seriously ill.

We also have the benefit of hearing from the then Disability Worker’s Commissioner, (now Public Advocate) Dan Stubbs, on the work achieved by the commission for disabled people all over Victoria.

Dr Oz Susler is a law academic at La Trobe University who started her career as a solicitor and then branched into academics looking at alternatives to going to court for people with disabilities, specifically cognitive and/or intellectual disabilities.

A great show, our conversations use these as starting points and uncover other interesting and informative aspects. A New You shows at 6pm in Adelaide on Ch44 tonight and tomorrow, Tuesday night at 7pm on Ch31 in Melbourne (simultaneously, of course, on ctvplus.org.au).

The remarkable Janelle and Michael Houston share a story that is shown through the film 'Roadz of Life'. To be released in 2027, the accidental documentary is the result of Michael's recording his new reality. After being affected with a sudden onset movement disorder, Janelle became a carer and Michael, the cared for.

The film shows stories from his experiences and that of those whose paths crossed his. It's a wild world out there and we're all on the ride.

Tonight's episode on A New You is ideal to see if you haven't yet caught one as it is a compilation of some of our most insightful conversations from the first three series.

It screens at 7pm on AEST on Ch31 and simultaneously at ctvplus.org.au

Taking a little over two years to achieve, during this time, in later 2024, ‘A New You’ visited Adelaide and spoke with researchers at the National Brain Injury Australia Conference. We see clips from there and the other identities we have shared conversations with since beginning A New You in early 2024.

The last segment of my short talk at the Uni Melbourne - Medical Doctor’s Student Conference from June 23.

Honoured to be asked to appear part of the affirmative camp of the debate ‘Should Australian Medicine Integrate T&CM? (Traditional and Complementary Medicine)’ alongside esteemed Professors Zhen Zheng – [Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor heading the PANDA Project now using acupuncture in the Emergency Department] and Professor Ian Brighthope – [global pioneer of nutritional medicine - launched Nutrition Care over 40 years ago].
This precise subject is one I have explored exhaustively through several circumstances during my lifetime

Breakdown 2021-2022

This trauma is difficult to clearly define. When does one ‘break down’?
And when does one complete the process? I feel this latter journey is one in which I am yet in progress.

What is certain is the marginalisation experienced for taking my past brush with late-stage cancer and subsequent investigations of health into serious consideration in refusing to be ‘voluntarily’ inoculated against the Covid infection, destroyed my career in the national disability arts and advocacy sectors dedicatedly built over the decades before Lockdowns.

The disability sector took the dire warnings of Covid times seriously.
It is understandable. If there is one group that inherently understands the challenges of being seen as of little value, even expendable, it is the disabled. Also, a group requiring safety in their surroundings and hygiene in practices, being told over and over again there was a toxic bug going around set alarm bells screaming.
Quite simply, my being seen as a danger for not being vaccinated caused ruin; in that sector anyway!

The destruction of my career and, as a result, my professional Self in the disability sector, is something that no longer keeps me awake at night. Those times are past, thankfully.

Day 2 Clip 2 of my talk at the Uni Melbourne - Medical Doctor’s Student Conference from June 23.

Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma 2009

10 years later I was, once again, on the move. Since 2003, alongside continuing physical and cognitive rehabilitation and reintegration into society, my recovery had seen both study and experience of many ‘alternative’ therapies. Professionally, I had independently inserted myself into the national disability arts sector. Working with groups in SA and in Vic and over time progressing from assistant to producer I investigated as many opportunities as I became aware of.

It was 2009 and, just having landed back in Adelaide, saw a series of Circus Skills Workshops nigh to begin. Produced over the year before and scheduled for the first ‘Dream Big International Youth Arts Festival’, integrated classes of disabled and non-disabled youth were anticipating their school’s inclusion. Production of ‘Roll Up, Roll Up’ had taken any attention remaining while studying a Cert 4 in Community Development.
Planning to head to Vancouver after the festival, I was to visit a friend from the Japan days.

In a happy place, yet my energy was not what it usually was and excuses kept being found to rest. In the night, sleep wouldn’t come. Tired all the time, my face was puffy and all that amounted after 4 visits to the dr in 2 weeks was being handed a Ventolin puffer… I wasn’t believed when I urged something was wrong.

The day after Good Friday I was taken to the Dr again, this time with spider veins popping up on wrists and ankles. I was told to go straight to hospital. The next morning, an oncologist flipped a catscan slide up to the window, showing the football sized lump embracing my lungs and heart. I breathed through a 5 millimetre diameter hole. All blood was being blocked from my brain.
Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Over the next year chemotherapy destroyed the tumour. As this ‘cure’ also destroyed the healthful aspects of my system, I saw a naturopath, juiced every day and went vegetarian. My integrated approach ultimately succeeded.
Cognitively though, I was wrenched back to about 3 years after the injury.

Relearning began again.
