Today we planted the last of our plants for the season. We added two rare species Picris squarrosa and Actites megalocarpus to the primary dune. The aim is to return these species to the coastal dunes where they once would have grown. Thank you to Matt Endacott Green Adelaide for sourcing the plants. After planting a little weeding to keep us on our toes. Minda Inc.City of Holdfast BayFriends of Parks and NatureLandcare Association of SA

Lots of lovely rain. Today we planted 170 young seedlings in the rain. Lucky for us it wasn’t windy as well. After our planting session we returned to INC Cafe for lunch. Next week we will be back tackling the ever growing weeds. Minda Inc.Green AdelaideLandcare Association of SACity of Holdfast BayFriends of Parks and Nature

The aftermath of Tuesday afternoon’s storm surge. Even the plants slid down holding on to the sand. The foredune is very fragile, each year additional spinifex is planted to stabilise the edges but Mother Nature had a different plan this week Minda Inc.Green AdelaideCity of Holdfast BayLandcare AustraliaFriends of Parks and Nature

A year ago last week a storm surge washed away metres of foredune. This afternoon’s high tide and its Déjà vu. 😢Minda Inc.Green AdelaideCity of Holdfast BayFriends of Parks and NatureLandcare Australia

Today a small group of volunteers assisted by Matt from Green Adelaide, planted some rare and locally extinct plants Swainson-pea grown by the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre to add to the biodiversity of the Minda Dunes and help return this plant to the coast. We also added some additional Lomandra leucocephala to the secondary dune. All watered in and hopefully we will get some follow up rain in the coming days. Every year we plant hundreds of plants, some in newly cleared patches and others to fill in where plants have died. Over the last 7 years we have added over 10,000 new plants which are in addition to the original 10,000 planted as part of the building of the Minda Coastal Park. 1000s of bags of weeds removed and then Mother Nature gives us a hand. Look at this amazing patch of Pelergonium australe. We didn’t plant these, they are all seeded from other plants we have added in previous years. Nature at its best. Today we weeded the Education zone. Lots of fresh sour sobs, thistles and winter grass are starting to flourish. We are doing our best to keep on top of the weeds and encourage the natural revegetation to take over. With the recent sunny days there has been plenty of butterfly activity. Yesterday’s sunshine was ideal for witnessing butterflies. The first Chequered Swallowtail was seen in the dunes. How lucky are we to have this special visitor. A perfect morning in the Minda Dunes, we weeded the extension of the Butterfly Habitat and made a start on the corner of the secondary dune halo weeding around our plants. A stroll along the path this afternoon and the butterflies were out as well as a Painted Dragon. 2 years ago Painted Dragons were reintroduced to the Minda Dunes and this summer there is plenty of activity widespread across the site. Last Tuesday we took advantage of the rain and weeded around the Education Zone. We were joined by Sarah Andrews MP, who has been a great supporter of our group for a number of years. Today we continued weeding, this time in and around the Butterfly Habitat. We were excited to find a number of tiny self seeded Adriana, a plant we have been reintroducing to the dunes to provide habitat for the Bitterbush Blue Butterfly.
