Dragons Bribie Island

Dragons Bribie Island We are breast cancer survivors of various ages from a diverse range of backgrounds, athletic abilities and interests.

Bribie Dragons provide a "face" for breast cancer statistics whilst spreading the message of breast cancer awareness through participation in the wonderful and strenuous sport of dragon boat racing. High on our list of priorities is having fun, trying new things, meeting interesting people and being involved in the challenging physical activity of dragonboating to promoting breast cancer awareness

. If you want to:
Get fit
Make new friends
Have fun and get in touch with your competitive side
Then Dragon Boating is the sport for YOU!!! We invite all breast cancer survivors and supporters to come and experience the magic that is part of our unique team - not necessarily as a paddler; there are many tasks that we welcome assistance with.

We usually boast about our typical training perks. The usual stuff like breathtaking sunrises, pods of dolphins, pelicans, and dugongs. Just a standard day in paradise for the Bribie Pink Dragons.

This morning, the universe decided our post-paddle cooldown needed a serious reality check. We pulled back up to the boat ramp, only to be ambushed by a bumblebee, an elephant, and a unicorn.

We aren't sure if we paddled so hard we started hallucinating, or if the local wildlife is evolving at an alarming rate. Either way, it was the absolute best (and weirdest) way to finish a session.

Our team is made so much stronger by the incredible male supporting dragons who stand by us every single day.

This week, we had a major milestone to celebrate - Ross turned 70!

To mark the big occasion, we traded the water for dry land. It was the perfect excuse to come together, share some food, and enjoy each other's company.

For once, there was no paddling to the beat of the drum, no counting strokes, and no worrying about staying in time. Just great friends, plenty of laughs, and a lot of appreciation for the amazing men in our club.

Happy 70th Birthday, Ross!

Our Bribie Pink Dragons recently traded our paddles for lawn bowls at the "Bowls with a Cause" charity day. Sponsored by LJ Ho**er Bribie Island, we are incredibly grateful to them for their donation of $1,936 to our club, and we want to say a huge thank you to them for this wonderful gift.

Whether we are gliding across the glassy morning water or having a laugh on the bowling green, our club thrives on camaraderie and showing that there is a full, beautiful life after a diagnosis. We are proud to be the largest breast cancer survivors club in the area.

Want to join our supportive crew?

We are out on the water three times a week and always looking for fresh faces, whether you are a survivor, a supporter, or just looking for a welcoming community. Come join us on Saturday mornings, Monday mornings, or Thursday afternoons. We are ready to hand you a paddle and welcome you into the boat.

The BreastScreen Queensland mobile service is back in our local area, making it easier than ever to keep up with your health checks. If you are due for your mammogram, or if you haven't had one in the last two years, now is the perfect time to book.

Where to find the van:
The mobile unit is stationed at the Bribie Island Library (1 Welsby Parade, Bongaree).

Dates and Times:
The bus will be operating right here on the island from 1 June through to 7 August 2026. They offer convenient appointment windows from 7:15 AM to 5:30 PM, making it easy to pop in before or after work.

Booking Details:
Appointments are essential, but you do not need a referral from your doctor. The service is entirely FREE for women aged 40 and over. You can secure a time by calling 13 20 50 or by visiting breastscreen.qld.gov.au to book online.

Why you shouldn't delay:
Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women, but early detection changes everything. A mammogram can spot tiny changes and cancers long before they can be seen or felt by you or a doctor. Catching it early gives you the best choice of treatment options and the highest chance of a full recovery.

It takes less than 30 minutes of your day. Please take this opportunity to look after yourself, and don't forget to tag or share this with the important women in your life to remind them to do the same.

A huge shoutout to our wonderful members Joie, Nikki, Julie, and Leonie, who recently represented the Bribie Dragons Breast Cancer Survivors Inc at The Pink Belles - Qld Cancer Council Hope Ambassadors event.

Our ladies had a truly fantabulous day filled with plenty of laughs, memory-making, duck plucking, and raffle prizes. It was a beautiful opportunity to connect with the community and support the incredible fundraising work done for Cancer Council Queensland.

A special thank you to The Pink Belles for hosting such an amazing day, and to Ben Cox from Cancer Council Queensland for his heartfelt and inspiring words.

Our standard is always to support each other and the wider community, and our four dragons did us proud.

Big congratulations to our Club President, Marie Smith, and Janette Reed. They recently spent an intense, high-energy weekend at Sports House on the Gold Coast alongside 10 prospective coaches from across the region. Marie and Jan successfully commenced the Level 1 Coaches Course, gaining invaluable insights and quickly learning that while directing a crew is one thing, true coaching is a craft!

The classroom phase is done, but the real work starts now as they face a strict 90-day deadline to officially complete the course and achieve full accreditation. Over the next three months, they will be balancing advanced online theory modules, designing 10 comprehensive training plans, completing formal self-reflections, and preparing thorough risk assessments.

Qualified coaches and sweeps are the absolute backbone of dragon boating, and without their dedication, our sport simply cannot grow or run safely. We are incredibly fortunate to be part of such a supportive, passionate club community, so please join us in wishing Marie and Jan the absolute best of luck as they tackle this demanding next phase to keep our club moving forward.
