🚨 Road Crash Rescue Training | Port Lincoln SES

Tonight, our experienced Road Crash Rescue operators took the team through a practical refresher covering scene assessment, outer and inner circles, and vehicle stabilisation.

It was a valuable refresher for our qualified operators while also giving our new volunteer recruits an introduction to what’s involved in Road Crash Rescue and the skills they can develop as SES volunteers.

This training also aligns with Road Safety Month, highlighting the important role SES volunteers play in responding to serious crashes across South Australia.

Regular training keeps our volunteers skilled, prepared and ready to respond. 🚒🦺

With strong winds currently affecting Port Lincoln, our SES volunteers have already been out this morning assisting a resident after a gazebo was blown into a neighbouring property.

With elevated winds continuing today and breezy conditions forecast again tomorrow, now is a good time to check around your property and secure loose outdoor items that could become airborne.

🚤 MARINE SAFETY | BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT

A few simple checks before launching can prevent a breakdown becoming an emergency on the water.
Before heading out, check:

🔋 Your battery is charged and in good condition
⛽ You have enough fuel, including a reserve
🦺 Lifejackets and safety equipment are serviceable
📡 Your marine radio is working
🆘 Your EPIRB is registered, in date and operational
⚓ Your vessel, engine, steering and essential equipment are in good working order
🎗Let family and friends know where you are going, and what time you will be back.

Engine failure, fuel problems, mechanical issues and flat batteries are among the major causes of breakdowns for powered vessels.

A little preparation before leaving the ramp can make a big difference when you're out on the water.

🚨 MONDAY'S MARINE SEARCH – EPIRB ACTIVATION 🚨

We aren't always able to share our requests for assistance while they are underway or immediately afterwards, but where appropriate, we like to give our community an insight into the work our volunteers undertake.

On Monday, 24 August, an EPIRB activation near Squeaky Beach, Boston Island prompted a significant marine search response during challenging weather, with heavy rain, low cloud and poor visibility on the water and across the area.

The response involved Port Lincoln SES 81, Port Lincoln Tugs, a SARDI vessel and the AMSA Challenger search and rescue aircraft from Melbourne, with assets tasked to search various areas in and around Boston Bay.

📻 A listening watch was also maintained from our SES Communications Room, including data entry and monitoring of various radio frequencies.

Further signals were later detected on a different frequency and location, indicating an older beacon most likely located on land.

Once it was established that no person or vessel was at risk, crews were stood down.

⚠️ A timely reminder to check your EPIRB, make sure it is registered, within its service life and working correctly. Old or unwanted EPIRBs should always be disposed of correctly.

🚧 Flinders Highway Open with Restrictions 🚧

We have been advised that one lane of the Flinders Highway is now open, between the Coffin Bay, turnoff and Airport Lane West side with traffic management in place.

Please drive to conditions and follow all directions from traffic controllers.

🚨🌧️ UPDATE – FLINDERS HIGHWAY CLOSED 🌧️🚨

⛔ Flinders Highway remains CLOSED between Coffin Bay Road and Airport Lane due to floodwater.

🔀 Detours are in place via Coffin Bay Road and Airport Lane.

🛣️ The road closure is now being managed by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT).

⏳ The road remains closed until further notice.

⚠️ Please obey all road closure signs and detours, drive to the conditions and never drive through floodwater.

🌊 Floodwater is currently over Flinders Highway, approximately 3.5 km west of the Coffin Bay turn-off, blocking the northside lane.

🚨 Port Lincoln SES and 🚒 Coffin Bay CFS are on scene directing traffic flow.

🚗💨 Please slow down, obey directions and drive to the conditions.

🔴🔵 A reminder that the speed limit when passing stationary emergency service vehicles displaying flashing red and/or blue lights is 25 km/h.
