On Sunday, a devastating terror attack struck at the heart of our community during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, resulting in the loss of 16 innocent lives and injuring many more. This was a targeted, antisemitic terrorist act against Jewish Australians gathered for the first night of Hanukkah.
This profound tragedy touches us all. Among those we’ve lost are people spanning generations, children, elders, community volunteers, and leaders whose warmth, service, and spirit enriched the lives of many.
At Multilingual Australia, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims. We mourn with our nation’s Jewish community and with all who have been traumatised by this senseless act of hate.
We stand united against violence, hatred, and discrimination. NO ONE should live in fear because of their faith, identity, or heritage.
In moments like this, our values matter most:
🧡 Solidarity: we stand with our Jewish colleagues, family members, and friends, affirming that their wellbeing and dignity are paramount.
🧡 Support: we encourage everyone in our network to offer compassion, listen without judgment, and be present for those who are grieving.
🧡 Unity in Diversity: our strength as a nation lies in our multicultural fabric. Hate and extremism threaten not just one community, but the safety and harmony of all.
To our community across Australia and beyond: let us reaffirm our commitment to respect, inclusion, and human dignity. Let us refuse to let fear and hatred define us; instead, let love, empathy, and understanding guide us.
In these dark times, we honour the memory of the lost and the courage of survivors and first responders.
May we continue to work together for a future where everyone can live and celebrate their culture and faith in safety and peace.
