Women living in regional and rural Australia are more likely to experience domestic and family violence and when violence occurs, distance, isolation and limited access to services can make getting help even harder.

This is why the work happening in our regional communities matters so much.

At Birds in the Bush, we believe regional communities can be part of the solution. We know the power of people looking out for one another, speaking up, starting conversations and refusing to accept domestic and family violence as simply someone else’s problem.

As Professor Sarah Wendt asks in this recent ABC story:

“What are we willing to accept as a community?”

Our answer is simple: we can do better.
We need to keep talking about domestic and family violence. We need better access to support in regional areas. We need to support the organisations doing the work on the ground. And importantly, we need to focus on prevention — not just what happens after violence has occurred.

Because every woman, no matter her postcode, deserves to feel safe.

A big milestone for Birds in the Bush!

We’re thrilled to share that Birds in the Bush has officially received Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status.

A really special couple of days with Rosie Batty AO at the Domestic Violence NSW Conference. 💛

I was so lucky to spend time with Rosie over dinner and brekkie, and then stay on to hear her speak so eloquently about our shared struggle to unite and work towards a world free from domestic and family violence.

When Rosie’s son Luke was murdered, she made the incredibly brave and selfless decision to use her voice to amplify the voices of survivors and advocate for change. Her courage, compassion and determination continue to inspire us.

We are so proud to have Rosie Batty AO as Patron of Birds in the Bush. Together, we strive to make the invisible visible.

And a huge shout out to Delia Donovan and the team at Domestic Violence NSW for bringing together such an important and powerful conference, and for the inspirational work you do every day to drive change.

Our Birds returned to Forbes High School to deliver Module 2 of the NestEd program to yr 7 - 12 students 🪺.

Building on Module 1, students continued the conversations about respectful relationships, asking insightful questions and engaged in practical activities to learn what they look like in real life.

Because creating safer relationships isn’t just a conversation for students. It’s putting theory into practice, in what they observe, consume, and experience every day.

Our birds also delivered a drop-in session for all senior staff supporting a whole-of-school approach where the language, expectations and learning around respectful relationships extend beyond the classroom and into the wider school community.

August 26: At about 8.30pm paramedics were called to a home in St James (WA) following reports of a wounded, unresponsive woman. Kah Ming Tan (28) was taken to Royal Perth Hospital but was declared dead. Police were called to the scene and arrested Younis Qambari (38), believed to be Ms Tan’s partner. He has been charged with murder. Police allege that he assaulted Ms Tan in the days before she died, causing extensive injuries which resulted in her death. Nothing further is known at present.

August 21: Just before 10am emergency services were called to a home in Ferntree Gully. There they found a woman, unofficially identified as Annmarie O’Reilly (30), who had suffered assault injuries. Despite best efforts, she died at the scene. A 45-year-old man, unofficially named as Patrick Stokes and believed to be the victim’s partner, was arrested at the scene and later charged with murder. He has been remanded in custody. Nothing further is reported at present.

August 12:  Shortly before 12.30am emergency services were called to a home in Slacks Creek. On arrival they found Djuan Baker-Adams (27) unresponsive in a bedroom at the home. Despite best efforts of paramedics, she died at the scene.  Police believe she died by asphyxiation.  Her former partner, Ronald Cora (37), is believed to have made the emergency call.  He has been charged with her murder and with contravening a domestic violence order.  Nothing further is reported at present.

A 16 year old girl is dead after allegedly being strangled during consensual s*x with a 16 year old boy.

We know what children don’t know, but do we know what they think they know?

Our teenagers are exposed to po*******hy and s*xual content at an age when they are still learning what healthy relationships, consent and intimacy look like.

Two truths live in this horrifying story:

1. The po*******hy industry must be more heavily regulated. Violent s*xual content should not be normalised or accessible to children.

2. We must educate our girls and boys about why violence has no place in s*x.

Our children deserve to learn about s*x from us. Safety and consent is nuanced, and inseparable. You can’t have one without the other.

August has been busy with our Birds attending a school every single week this month!

And yet here we are, again.

This week, boys from a prestigious school and players from one of Australia’s most influential sporting clubs are at the centre of serious s*xual violence allegations.

We don’t know all the fact, but we do know this:

Boys don’t learn respect by accident, and accountability cannot begin after the headline.

Consent. Boundaries. Respect. Accountability.

These are skills we need to teach early, and keep teaching.

In early August two of our birds headed to Molong to deliver module 1 of the NestEd program. Over 150 students from years 7-11 were reached over two days of delivery. We also had a fabulous session with the whole of senior school staff. We are so grateful to Molong Central School for their engagement with the program 🙌🏼
