On Saturday we gathered in the shearing shed at The Farm at Byron Bay for a screening of Rehydrate Australia - a documentary exploring how Natural Sequence Farming is restoring landscapes and strengthening farming enterprises across the country. It was heartening to see farmers, land stewards, and consumers come together to learn, ask questions, and witness the case studies of landscapes transformed through this approach.

Recently, our Director, Blair Beattie, stepped out of his comfort zone and took the hot seat on national television to speak about one of our most important initiatives, Reconnect Retreats.

These gatherings are designed for farmers. They offer a rare chance to step off the farm, prioritise personal wellbeing, and reconnect with other farmers and with themselves. Just as importantly, every retreat is offered at zero cost. It’s a simple gesture of gratitude for the people who grow the food that feeds this country.

There’s a saying: you might need a doctor now and then, and a lawyer once in a lifetime if you’re lucky. But we all need farmers every single day, three times a day.

Thank you to Monique and David at Sunrise for the opportunity to share what these retreats are making possible for farmers across the country. At The Good Farm Shop, everything begins with the farmers, the people growing food in relationship with the land.

But regeneration doesn’t happen on farms alone. It’s shaped in kitchens, grocery aisles, and everyday choices. It depends on businesses willing to support these practices, and on all of us creating the demand that allows them to endure.

When we ask how our food was grown and who grew it, we influence how farming is done. Every purchase carries weight. Every bite is a vote for the future we’re leaving our kids.

In Episode 11, vigneron Nick ‘Duggie’ Dugmore speaks with a clarity shaped by both farming life and personal experience. Living with stage 4 bowel cancer, a diagnosis he has traced back to an acute glyphosate exposure on his vineyard, Nick brings a perspective that is at once deeply personal and profoundly shared.

He reminds us that farmers aren’t the problem. They are the people who feed us every day, often carrying the weight of systems they didn’t create.

Duggie draws a striking parallel:
In the 1920s, ci******es were first linked to lung cancer.
It took 7,000 peer-reviewed papers for the world to act.
Glyphosate is already at around 500.

So he asks the question that sits at the heart of this episode: How long will we wait?

Not as a warning, but as an invitation. An invitation to recognise the possibility in front of us, to move sooner this time, and to shape a food system that honours life rather than eroding it.

Duggie’s message isn’t about blame. It’s about shared responsibility, and the reminder that health is something we tend together through the choices we make, the systems we support, and the relationships we cultivate with land and with each other.

Across the world, a quiet shift is underway.
Forests are being protected.
Soils are being restored.
Birds and butterflies are returning.

Courts and scientific bodies are questioning chemicals once assumed safe.
Communities are standing up for their health, their food, and their ecosystems.
These stories reflect a rising awareness of the hidden forces shaping our food system, and a collective desire for something healthier, wiser, and more humane.

The Invisible Ingredient is one space where these deeper conversations can unfold, helping people connect the dots between agriculture, health, policy, ecology, and personal choice. It is not the source of these global changes, but part of the growing chorus calling us to pay attention.

Awareness doesn’t stay still. Once felt, it moves. And globally, it is moving.

Most people don’t realise how deeply pesticides influence the food on our plates — and the living systems we depend on.

In Episode 7: The Long Game: Glyphosate and Practice Change, Dr Charles Benbrook brings decades of research into focus, showing how pesticides move through soil, water, wildlife, and ultimately our own bodies — and how glyphosate has become a defining part of that story.

He traces the policies, incentives, and information gaps that led us here, and reminds us that none of this is fixed. Our food system looks the way it does not out of inevitability, but because of the choices we’ve made — and the choices we can make differently.

This conversation is an invitation to see the long arc of practice change, and to recognise the influence we carry as voters, growers, consumers, and neighbours. The path forward is already being shaped by people choosing connection, diversity, and food grown in ways that honour life.

A Different Kind of Dairy

In a region where so many dairies have disappeared, Mungalli Creek chose another way forward, guided not by industry expectations but by soil, seasons, and a deep trust in the quiet intelligence of the land. Here, farming moves at the pace of nature. Weeds are welcomed, diversity is celebrated, and the health of the soil becomes the compass for every decision.

This is a place where two brothers listened closely to what the landscape was asking for, and shaped a dairy rooted in care, connection, and the belief that nourishment begins long before milk reaches a bottle. Their story reminds us that thriving food systems don’t emerge from efficiency alone, but from relationships that honour the life beneath our feet.

Industrial agriculture didn’t happen by accident. It was engineered into place.

“After the Second World War, people were told to replace themselves with machinery and chemicals… The chemicals become necessary when you’re producing in monoculture.”

In Episode 6: Close To Home: Glyphosate and Localization, Helena Norberg-Hodge traces how this shift reshaped our food cultures. Long supply chains pushed aside local knowledge. Monocultures replaced mixed farms. Communities lost the relationships that once kept food systems grounded and alive.

And yet, she reminds us that none of this is permanent. Change can happen quickly when people return to the roots of food: connection, community, and proximity.

It begins with shortening the distance between farm and table, rebuilding trust between growers and eaters, and calling on our public institutions to choose local food where it matters most. It begins with recognising the joy that comes from small, diversified farms where farmers know the people they nourish and feel valued in return.

Real change begins with us.
“It’s not going to happen without a movement, and that movement needs to come from concerned consumers.”

Across our first few episodes of The Invisible Ingredient, a pattern has begun to surface. Different voices, from different worlds, tracing the same thread in their own language.

These conversations are not isolated. They echo across landscapes and generations, pointing to a deeper truth: the way we treat the earth is reflected in the way we treat ourselves.
From the rise of monoculture to the quiet accumulation of chemicals in our bodies and landscapes, to the ways these systems dull our senses, reshape our choices, and distance us from the land that feeds us, the message emerging invites greater awareness.

And in the episodes still to come, this thread grows stronger.

Not a story about blame. A story about reconnection.

About remembering the interdependence we were born into, and imagining what becomes possible when food is grown in ways that honor that bond.

Glyphosate is only one piece of the picture.

Investigative journalist Carey Gillam has spent years uncovering how this single herbicide became a gateway to something bigger - a food system laced with chemicals, enabled by regulators who too often look the other way. She reveals how safety margins meant to protect children are routinely waived, and how oversight has failed to keep pace with the science.

“We need to understand what these pesticides are doing, not just.. individually in an isolated way, but in combination”

The conversation leaves us asking: If the same companies that sell the chemicals help decide what’s considered safe, who are these systems really built to protect?
