Ever found a bare-nosed wombat napping under your house or heard a possum thumping around in your roof?

You’re not alone. Data from Wildlife Victoria reveals that about 2,400 native animals were reported by people as being in, on or under buildings over the past decade.

For a new study, The Conversation analysed these reports to find out which animals were taking up residence in buildings, which parts of dwellings they occupied and what they were doing there.

HPAI - or avian bird flu - is continuing to spread through Australian wildlife, and the scale of the challenge is becoming increasingly clear.

As of 1 September 2026, Australia had recorded 456 confirmed H5 bird flu events in wildlife, with detections across Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.

More than 35,000 reports have also been made to the national Emergency Animal Disease Hotline.

But behind those numbers is a much bigger story.

September is National Koala Month- and one of Australia's most iconic animals is under threat.

Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) may be an unofficial emblem for Australian wildlife, but these globally recognised marsupials could become extinct within our lifetime if action isn't taken now. Koalas are currently listed as "Endangered" in NSW, ACT and QLD, with populations continuing to decline across all three states.

Koalas are currently threatened by:
* Deforestation- Australia has one of the highest rates of deforestation of any country in the world. Eucalyptus forests are vital for koalas, providing habitat, breeding grounds and food sources.
* Vehicle strikes- thousands of koalas lose their lives every year attempting to cross Australia's busy and dangerous roads, which cut through their habitats.
* Dog attacks- off-leash and free-roaming pet dogs can cause devastating and often fatal injuries to koalas.
* Disease- koalas can contract a strain of Chlamydia that causes severe and often life-threatening health conditions, including blindness and reproductive issues.

As a well-known and loved species, koalas are an umbrella species for all Australian native wildlife. Their extinction would not only mean the loss of a unique and important species but also signify a greater risk to all native wildlife.

In his book, Platypus Matters - The Extraordinary Story of Australian Mammals, author Jack Ashby says it best... 🤎

'...I have come to the conclusion that Australia has the most incredible, interesting and wonderful wildlife on earth'.

And don't we know it.

Jack is the Assistant Director of Cambridge's and spends much of his time studying Australian mammals and in the field working on conservation projects.
