Yesterday we got our hands dirty sowing green manure crops at the garden 🌱

Green manures are planted for soil improvement β€” they add organic matter, nitrogen, and boost the soil microbiome, which is vital for healthy plant growth.

Green manure crops are typically fast-growing and can include mustard, buckwheat, oats, sorghum, clover, lucerne, radish, and broad beans. Adding legumes like beans, peas, and lucerne brings extra benefits. Their roots form partnerships with rhizobia - bacteria that draw nitrogen from the air and release it into the soil as the plant decomposes, feeding future crops.

This year, we're using a special mix put together by Mel from The Brickworks Farm Seedlings β€” a long-time friend and supporter of MVCG. Thank you Mel! πŸ™

Our method: spread compost and dolomite lime over the bed, broadcast the seeds, rake gently to distribute and just cover them, then cross our fingers for rain (or we water in)! We cut the crop down before it fully flowers, as nutrient levels drop once flowering begins.

Want to learn more about green manure rotations? Milkwood Permaculture has a wonderful article here: https://www.milkwood.net/2021/03/12/how-to-grow-green-manures/

Have you grown green manure crops before? We'd love to hear what worked for you πŸ‘‡

🌱 Young Hands in the Garden!
Recently we had the pleasure of welcoming Year 8 students from Oxley College as part of their Service Learning Program β€” and what a wonderful visit it was!

The students got stuck into all sorts of garden tasks: worm farming, composting, sheet mulching, and potting seedlings for our upcoming Autumn Sale. They even got to touch and taste some of the produce ready for harvest β€” always a highlight!

Oxley's Service Learning program is built around the belief that volunteering is about more than donations β€” it's about giving time, energy and skills to build real connections with your local community. We couldn't agree more, and we felt that spirit in every pair of hands that helped out.
Thank you to the Oxley Year 8 students and their teachers for choosing MVCG as part of their journey. We hope it's the start of a long friendship. πŸ’š

🌿 MVCG is open Mondays & Thursdays β€” drop by to say hi, or bring your gloves and join us!

These bottled preserves will be available on our sale table at our Mega Autumn Plant sale on 2nd May (from 10am till 2pm) at Moss Vale Community Garden in Railway St, Moss Vale.

Come in and say "Hi!" πŸ‘‹
