𝗞𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝘂𝗿𝗿𝘂 (𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴) 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 – 𝙉𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧

The First Peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation, including the Traditional Owners of this land, the Wurundjeri woiwurrung people, measure change with an annual cycle of seasons marked by changes in the land, animals, water and sky.

On this land there are seven annual seasons while two non-annual seasons, fire and flood, occur on average, every seven and 28 years.

Today marks the start of the 𝗕𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝘂𝗿𝗿𝘂 season, when the kangaroo grass flowers. Bats are seen flying around, as well as the male common brown butterfly. Coranderrk (Victorian Christmas bush) begins flowering.

𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 - 𝙄 𝘼𝙢 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙉𝙤 𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙚

This year's theme "𝗜 𝗔𝗺 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗡𝗼 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲", highlights that not every disability is visible, but every person with a disability deserves to be seen and understood.

An invisible (or hidden) disability can be a physical, mental, or neurological condition that isn't immediately obvious to an onlooker, yet significantly impacts someone's daily life.

So let’s build a more inclusive community by listening, learning, showing understanding, and avoiding assumptions about what someone else may be experiencing.

Celebrating our wonderful Carers this 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 with a delicious lunch and highlighting the theme "𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿: 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲".

A massive thank you to our very own Community Lunch cook 𝗠𝗮𝗷 for the lunch and our 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 class for hosting, as well as to 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 and the 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶-𝗯𝗲𝗸 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 for the funding to be able to provide this event with a relaxing massage and small gift of an ice cream from 𝗦𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗶 𝗚𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼 on West St.

It was also great to have the Merri-bek City Council Mayor - Nat Abboud and State MP - Kathleen Matthews-Ward attend and show their support for this event, knowing how important Carers are and acknowledge the ongoing unpaid care and support they provide to loved ones.

𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 - 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙧: 𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙑𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚

This years theme "𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿: 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲" shines a light on the invaluable contribution of unpaid carers and encourages all Australians to recognise, support and care for the carers in their families, workplaces and communities.

There are more than 3 million Australians who provide unpaid care to a family member or friend, so please support a carer you know by:

- Checking in on them regularly
- Offer to provide them with a break
- Encourage self-care
- Initiate support
- Acknowledge and appreciate them

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 - 𝙇𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙙: 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙑𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨, 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚

This year's theme "𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱: 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲" is an opportunity to meaningfully engage with people with lived experience (PWLE) of mental health conditions and to recognize their knowledge as a vital form of expertise. This year’s campaign calls for their voices to shape the policies, services and decisions that affect their lives.

Too often, PWLE are asked to share their stories but excluded from decisions. Meaningful engagement extends beyond simply being heard. It means creating opportunities for people to influence decisions, co-design services, strengthen peer-led approaches, challenge stigma and strengthen accountability.

On this World Mental Health Day, let us move from listening to action – and build mental health systems with PWLE, not merely for them.
