That’s a wrap from Tamworth

The final day of the RSL NSW State Congress brought delegates together for voting on important decisions as well as some final words from ANZAC House and Vince Williams CSC.

Over the past few days, we’ve come together to connect, commemorate and advocate, sharing ideas, strengthening our collective voice and reaffirming our commitment to supporting veterans, their families and our wider communities.

Maroubra RSL Sub-Branch is also proud to have received the Eastern Metropolitan Region 2026 Sport and Recreation Program Award. This recognition reflects the dedication of our team and the enthusiastic participation of our members in our Sport and Recreation Program throughout the year.

A big thank you to Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre, Tamworth City Bowling Club Ltd, All Settlers Best Western, Tamworth City Bowling Club Ltd and the incredible support crew who helped make this event possible.

To all the sub-branch members and friends the Maroubra crew connected with throughout the weekend, thank you for the conversations, shared stories and camaraderie. Safe travels home to you all, and we look forward to catching up again soon!

Congress, camaraderie and a little friendly competition.

After the second day of the RSL NSW State Congress, it was time to get out of the conference room and onto the bowling green at Tamworth City Bowling Club for our Sport & Recreation activity.

It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with old friends, make new ones and share stories, with plenty of laughs and a little friendly competition along the way. A great reminder that the RSL community is about more than meetings — it’s about mateship, connection and coming together.

That’s a wrap on the second day of RSLNSW congress 2026. Today was all about networking, collaboration and camaraderie, with fantastic sessions and plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow Sub-Branches from across NSW.

The Maroubra RSL crew caught up with old friends and made some new ones along the way, including Port Stephen’s RSL, Branxton RSL, Gunnedah RSL and Medowie RSL. We even had the opportunity for a face-to-face catch-up with the President of RSL NSW.

It’s days like these that remind us we’re part of something bigger. Sharing ideas, building relationships and learning from one another helps strengthen our collective commitment to supporting veterans, their families and our wider community.

Today, 24 October, marks United Nations Day, commemorating the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945.

Today, we recognise the Australians who have served under the United Nations flag, contributing to international peace and security and supporting communities around the world.

We honour their service and sacrifice, and remember those who gave their lives in the pursuit of peace.

Maroubra RSL Sub-Branch representatives have arrived at the 2026 RSL NSW State Congress in Tamworth, joining fellow members and representatives from across NSW for an important opportunity to come together, discuss the future of the RSL, and advocate for veterans and their families.

Congress provides a valuable forum to share ideas, consider key issues affecting the veteran community, recognise the work of Sub-Branches, and help shape the direction of the RSL across NSW.

Of course, it’s also about the people who make our organisation so special. Our reps enjoyed a dinner with fellow members from the Eastern Metropolitan District Council (EMDC), strengthening connections and sharing in the camaraderie and mateship that underpin our RSL community.

Maroubra RSL is proud to be part of something bigger - supporting our veterans, their families and the wider RSL community.

Maroubra RSL Sub-Branch recently enjoyed a day trip to North Head, where they partook in the Defence of Sydney Tour, exploring the coastal defences and military history that played an important role in protecting Sydney during wartime.

From historic gun emplacements to the underground military tunnels, it was a great opportunity to learn more about our local military history, reflect on the service of those who defended our shores, and share the experience with fellow members.

The day continued with a wonderful lunch hosted by our friends at Balgowlah-Seaforth-Clontarf RSL Sub-Branch — a great opportunity to catch up, strengthen connections and enjoy the mateship that makes our RSL community so special.

Prior to our October General Meeting, Maroubra RSL Sub-Branch held a commemoration honouring veterans who served in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO).

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the beginning of Australian service in Afghanistan, with Operation Slipper commencing on 11 October 2001. Over the following two decades, more than 35,000 Australians served in Afghanistan and the wider MEAO, contributing to counter-terrorism operations, maritime security, reconstruction, development assistance, and the training and mentoring of Afghan security forces.

Our commemoration provided an important opportunity to reflect on the courage, commitment and sacrifice of those who served, remember those who lost their lives, and acknowledge the lasting impact of service on veterans, their families and loved ones.

As we honour those who served during these operations, we also recognise our contemporary veterans and the challenges they continue to face beyond their service. It is our responsibility as a community to ensure their contributions are never forgotten and that veterans and their families continue to feel supported, connected and valued.

Congratulations to all the talented students who took part in this wonderful art competition

It was especially lovely to see one of the winning artworks featuring our very own Maroubra RSL Sub-Branch member, George Johnson. The artwork created by these talented students are available to view on the websites below, or at the Australian War Memorial until February 2027.

A wonderful way for our younger generation to connect with and recognise the stories and service of our veterans.

This Sunday, 11 October, we join Australians across the nation in commemorating 25 years since the beginning of Australia’s service in Afghanistan.

We honour the more than 35,000 Australians who served in Afghanistan and the Middle East Area of Operations in relation to Afghanistan, remember those who lost their lives during or as a result of their service, and acknowledge the lasting impact on veterans and their families.

We pay tribute to their courage, professionalism and commitment, and recognise the sacrifices made by those who served and those who stood beside them.

This Sunday 11 October, Australians will come together to mark 25 years since the beginning of Australia’s service in Afghanistan.

More than 35,000 Australians served in Afghanistan and the Middle East Area of Operations in relation to Afghanistan between 2001 and 2021.

A National Commemorative Service at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra will honour their courage, professionalism and commitment, remember those who lost their lives during or as a result of their service, and acknowledge the enduring impact on veterans and their families.
