North Steyne Boardriders seem to be popping up everywhere at the moment.

State Titles. Australian Titles. Team events. Grom comps. Longboard events. Even the Championship Tour.

The results are coming from every corner of the club.

Susan Levitt added an Australian Title. Belinda Koorey collected both Australian and NSW State Titles. Izzy Higgs has been busy collecting trophies from Thailand to Manly, while Tiaan Cronje recently punched his ticket to the Australian Titles.

Then there's George Pittar.

Fresh off earning his way back onto the Championship Tour, George wasted no time settling in, claiming his first CT victory at Margaret River and joining Richie Lovett as one of the few North Steyne surfers to win at the sport's highest level.

Not bad company to keep.

What makes it more impressive is that it isn't just one or two standout surfers carrying the load.

Across 176 members, North Steyne continues to produce results from every generation. From groms finding their feet, to former CT surfer Dayyan Neve helping steer the club deep into the Australian Boardriders Battle Finals, there always seems to be someone in the jersey putting their hand up.

Last weekend was more of the same.

North Steyne claimed the Sandon Point Teams Challenge, taking home the $10,000 winner's cheque and another team title for the cabinet.

Along the way, Izzy Higgs earned MVP honours, posting a 9.33 and an 8.90 to record the highest heat total of the entire event.

Safe to say the claw has been getting a workout lately.

Not a bad time to be part of the North Steyne crew. đŸ€

Pam Burridge called it "the biggest washing machine ever." That didn't stop thirty women paddling out with the World Champion.

The Bate Bay Queens welcomed Australian surfing pioneer Pam Burridge to the beach over the weekend for a special coaching session.

Pam had the group working through peak positioning, ocean awareness, reading conditions and finding the right waves.

"It was a mission, but we had great fun and learned a lot. Watch out."

The advice clearly landed.

For many of the women, it wasn't just about surfing better. It was about building confidence in the ocean, sharing waves with new friends and learning from someone who helped change the sport for women in Australia.

"She's given us all confidence. It's been really nice being with the girls, encouraging each other and just having a go."

That's exactly what the Bate Bay Queens are building.

Created for women who value connection, friendship and fun in the water, Cronulla's newest social boardriders club has already grown to 30 members after just three meetups.

Not bad for a club that's only just getting started.

A huge shout out to Pam for sharing her time, stories and experience, and to the NRMA Insurance RISE program for supporting new women's clubs and helping create more opportunities for women to find their place in the lineup.

The first competitors were pulling on wetsuits in the dark. The last were still swapping stories at Broulee Brewhouse long after the final heat.

Somewhere in between, 63 women and girls aged from five to over 60 paddled out for the inaugural ‘Girls Can Surf’ event by Malua Boardriders

Competitors travelled from Wollongong to the Sapphire Coast, with surfers aged from just a few years old through to women in their 60s sharing the lineup across two locations.

The more experienced surfers took on the walls at South Broulee, while the next generation found their feet at Bay Street. Regardless of age, ability or division, the encouragement was consistent all day.

As organiser Lauren Hare put it:

"Seeing participants from across the region come together, form new friendships and encourage each other both in and out of the water made all the hard work worthwhile”

The event was delivered by Malua Bay Boardriders' Women's Sub Committee, established through support from the NRMA Insurance RISE program.

Looking across two packed beaches and 63 smiling faces, it was a pretty good reminder of why programs like that matter.

A huge shout out to the volunteers at Malua Bay Boardriders, Shane Wehner, Wayne "Mooza" Carberry from Surfrider Foundation Yuin Country, and everyone who helped bring the day to life.

Safe to say there are already a few people asking when the next one is.

440 flights have been logged by boardrider clubs across our State this year, with that number climbing every week as more pilots get trained and more clubs take delivery.

Over the past fortnight, the rollout headed south, with another group of boardrider clubs receiving drones delivered in honour of Mercury Psillakis.

One of those clubs was North Cronulla junior boardriders club where trained pilot Christian Hosick has already seen the impact.

"All the kids are pumped to see it hovering above. They feel safe in the water knowing we're watching from the beach."

So far, 32 of the 60 clubs set to receive drones in 2026 have taken delivery, with final rollouts planned across the state in the coming weeks.

"We're extremely proud to support our volunteer-run boardrider clubs with an important community asset that has the potential to save lives," said Surfing NSW's Matt Lawson.

The numbers are growing. The pilot network is growing. More importantly, the community behind it continues to grow too.

Every rollout means more trained pilots, more eyes on the water and more clubs building confidence in their ability to support surfing activity throughout the year.

As Merc's legacy continues to spread across the coastline, so does the willingness of clubs to step up for one another and help keep their communities safer in the water.

Fresh off claiming two State Titles at Coffs Harbour, Leihani Zoric wasn't done yet, backing it up with another standout performance at the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles.

Leihani went back to back in both the Open Women's and Junior Girls divisions, defending the two titles she won in 2025 and adding another chapter to what has already been a pretty special few weeks.

"It felt really good to win this comp. I just wanted to have heaps of fun and enjoy the moment, and that usually brings out my best performance."

The family wasn't done there either.

Her mum, Kirsty Shaw, dominated the Masters Women's final by almost seven points to take home the title herself. Not a bad family trip.

Across the event, NSW surfers were right in the mix:

đŸ„‡ Leihani Zoric – Open Women
đŸ„‡ Leihani Zoric – Junior Girls
đŸ„‡ Kirsty Shaw – Masters Women
đŸ„‡ Melissa Combo – Women's Longboard
đŸ„ˆ Joe Rocco Sommerville – Junior Boys
đŸ„‰ Melissa Combo – Masters Women
đŸ„‰ Robbie Page – Over 50 Men
đŸ„‰ Rohnin Henry Micale - Mens Longboard

Finalists:
‱ Matilda Thearle – Open Women (4th)
‱ Rohnin Henry Micale – Open Men (4th)

Huge congratulations to all of our NSW representatives who competed at the 13th Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles presented by Rip Curl

As if State Classic didn’t already give us enough stories for one week, more than 30 women from right across the coastline paddled out together at Diggers Beach for our Her Wave session.

The surf was ON and nobody held back.

From QS surfers to first-time competitors, mums surfing alongside daughters, juniors sharing the lineup/ trading waves with Over 60 State Champions.

Andrea from Freshwater Longboard Club was cheering from the sand after sharing her own story about finding surfing later in life.
“I’m stoked to see where women’s surfing is at right now and how we take care of the sport for our girls in the future.”

Out in the lineup, Gee and her daughter Aliyah from Port Macquarie Surfboard Riders Club surfed side by side together.

“You always dream your kids will surf with you one day. To be out there with my daughter, and so many other women all pushing themselves and supporting each other, was really special.”

One of the nicest moments came watching our Over 60s State Champion Greta walking up the beach beside Lakey from the U12 Girls after the session. Different generations, same froth.

The girls then rolled back into Aanuka Beach House to refuel before hearing from Philippa Anderson, Arabella Tarpey and Carly White, who opened up conversations around participation, pathways and women’s experiences in surfing from all different perspectives.

And honestly, the photos probably only show half of it.

Huge thanks to the NRMA Insurance Rise program for helping make sessions like this possible through Her Wave.

As Natasha from LRSA - Longy Boardriders put it best: “The girls absolutely tore it up out there and dominated the lineup. I just love being around all the girls. Yeoowww.” 💙

The titles are what everyone sees. But the week is built by the people around it.

Parents running between sites, crew up before sunrise, every coach, club member, commentator, judge, photographer, water safety crew member and person behind the scenes keeping it all moving, thank you.

The VW State Classic is only possible because of the people around it đŸ€đŸ’™

Chair lifts, comeback wins, local heroes and one of the best days of surfing the Coffs Coast has seen all week 🏆

Finals Day at the VW State Classic 2026 delivered from sunrise to sunset across Park, Jetty, Sawtell and Arrawarra.

The call to move the Junior Finals to the Coffs Harbour Boat Ramp turned into one of the best decisions of the week, with pumping barrels and dynamic conditions producing some of the best surfing of the entire event. The U12 Boys charged challenging surf beyond their years, while the Grainger sisters stole the show with Chloe and Mila both making the U12 and U14 finals. Chloe’s win ended with friends chair-lifting her all the way up the rocks into her mum’s arms.

Maverick Magugan dominated the U14 Boys final, Poppy O’Reilly continued her incredible run with another U18 Girls win, and local favourite Hamish Harrigan sent the beach into chaos after a come-from-behind victory in the U16 Boys. Ben Zanatta closed the week in style, dropping a 9.13 on his opening wave of the U18 Boys final before comboing the field.

At Park Beach, Dean Bowen stepped out of his role as head of water safety and into the lineup to post a near-perfect 9-point ride on his way to the O30 Men’s State Title. Dom Thomas claimed the Open Men’s title in one of the closest finals of the week, edging Van Whiteman by just 0.06 points in front of a packed shoreline.

Arrawarra turned on six-foot surf for the Longboard finals, where Will Crowe made a statement return to competition and Amy Main was left emotional after learning she’d won on the beach. Sonorilyn Adlawan once again brightened up the lineup in her signature polka dot wetsuit, while Alan Morrison finally broke through after two years of runner-up finishes to defeat long-time rival Jason Livingstone in a storybook moment.

From juniors pushing themselves in heavy surf to Masters, Longboarders, SUP competitors and families living every part of the week together, thank you to everyone who made the VW State Classic 2026 one to remember.
