The heartbreaking truth is that not every baby can be saved, but even when one life is lost, we never quit fighting for the mother.

When Naw Hser stopped contracting and feeling fetal movement four hours after her water broke at full term, she feared the worst. Four hours after that, she arrived at Raintree Clinic, seeking our help.

One of our PAs took her history and performed a physical examination. There was no fetal heart rate and no fetal movement. An ultrasound scan also showed no fetal movement and no fetal heart activity. The patient was diagnosed with intrauterine fetal death.

Naw Hser's cervix was fully dilated, so the team delivered the baby vaginally. Naw Hser received two units of blood on postpartum day 1. By postpartum day 7, her condition had not improved. Following a repeat ultrasound and some tests, our team suspected uterine rupture. They performed an emergency life-saving procedure, a subtotal hysterectomy, that morning.

Following the operation, Naw Hser's condition gradually improved. She had suffered a tremendous loss, but because she had access to quality medical care, she survived the ordeal.

We were Saw Yaw's fourth stop in his journey to find treatment for the painful swelling in his neck. He spent a month being treated to no avail before he was referred to Raintree Clinic.

We operated on the swollen side of Saw Yaw's neck, which proved to be an abscess with some gangrenous skin — the kind of thing that can easily turn deadly without treatment. Afterward, he received supportive care, including antibiotics, analgesics, vitamins, and dressings. He continued to improve, and we discharged him 16 days after surgery.

Treatable medical conditions can be deadly when untreated. Earth Mission is working to make sure quality health care is accessible to everyone in Karen State.

We're excited to announce that we're celebrating TEN YEARS of our Physician Associate (PA) program! No one exemplifies the spirit of Earth Mission and this program better than our friend and senior staff member Saw Ray Kaw.

Ray Kaw joined Earth Mission in 2006, and he’s poured his heart into every step of our journey since then. He’s treated children on the front lines, taught our PA students countless blocks of instruction, performed surgeries, hauled dirt, dug trenches, cooked for the hungry, laughed in the rain, and huddled with us during airstrikes. Now, he’s Raintree Clinic’s Site Director.

None of this would be possible without the blood, sweat, and tears Ray Kaw has shed with us over the last 20 years. So, to celebrate, we asked him to share a little about his passion for Karen health care. Thank you for reading; these are the stories closest to the hearts of all of us over here.

Myanmar has entered its sixth year of civil war, and hostilities have only intensified in the past nine months since the last elections.

"By the end of 2025, an estimated 21.9 million people in Myanmar were in need of humanitarian assistance, including 15.4 in need of protection among whom 6.9 million (are) children," a recent ReliefWeb analysis reads. "Internal displacement rose to roughly to 3.7 million among whom around 40% are children, with nearly 200,000 more having fled to neighboring countries since the 2021. Communities continue to face overlapping crises: conflict, displacement, movement and humanitarian access restrictions, food insecurity, inflation, livelihood collapse, and eroding access to essential services. Women, children, older persons, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups continued to experience disproportionate impacts across all protection risks."

Pray for Myanmar. Pray that the conflict ends and that the people who live here can go about their lives in safety. And pray for Earth Mission, that we can grow and serve the people here amid the dangers of war.
