‼️ It’s time to stand up for Tasmania’s agricultural industry ‼️
An important rally is being organised by Lindsay White and FLAG (Farmers Landowners Action Group), supported by TasFarmers.
Purpose -
☘️ To hold a peaceful rally of farmers and supporters in front of Parliament House, Hobart with a cavalcade of tractors, to make a clear and strong public statement about the growing burden of red tape, regulation, the unfair treatment of farmers by FPA and government interference affecting Tasmanian farmers.
Key message -
❌ Farmers are being buried in red tape.
❌ Rules are being made by government departments, both State and Federal, with little understanding of the practical balance farmers manage every day between production, animal welfare, staff safety, biosecurity, fire risk, weeds, environmental care, drought, infrastructure and financial pressure.
❌ The constant increases in administration, fear of penalties, and dealings with officious government departments such as the FPA and Biosecurity Tasmania are taking a serious toll on farmers’ mental health and businesses.
Main concerns -
⛔️ Farmers are becoming less competitive because of increasing regulation, restrictions and compliance costs.
⛔️ Private farmland is being treated as if it is public conservation land, without proper recognition of property rights or compensation.
⛔️There is growing concern that family farms will become unviable and eventually be bought out by foreign investors or large companies for tree planting, carbon farming and environmental offsets, as seen with concerns around places like Rushy Lagoon.
⛔️The impact of Commonwealth EPBC requirements is a major concern for farmers.
⛔️The Tasmanian Government must stand up for Tasmanian farmers and ensure that any investigation and enforcement body is fair, practical, independent and accountable.
Rally plan -
🚜 The aim is to have tractors parked or assembled near Parliament House, subject to approval from Hobart City Council, TasPolice and any relevant parliamentary authorities.
🚜 All tractors will be registered, in excellent condition and fitted with cabs.
🚜 Tractors will come from the Midlands, South East, Huon and Derwent Valley. Each area should have one organiser responsible for contacting farmers, confirming numbers and coordinating arrival times.
🧑🌾 👩🌾 Farmers and supporters will then gather on Parliament House lawns @11.00am to hear from our rally speakers.
Key demands - We call on the Tasmanian Government to:
⭕️ review the Forest Practices Act, not just the regulations;
⭕️ reduce unnecessary red tape and administration for farmers;
⭕️ make rules that reflect real farming practice;
⭕️ require government departments to deal with farmers fairly and respectfully;
⭕️ recognise the mental health impact of heavy-handed regulation;
⭕️ protect private farmland and property rights;
⭕️ compensate farmers where land use rights are removed or restricted;
⭕️ stop treating farmers as environmental offenders when they are trying to run productive businesses;
⭕️ ensure Tasmania’s family farms are not regulated out of existence;
⭕️ stand up for Tasmanian farmers in the face of Commonwealth EPBC requirements; and
⭕️ ensure any investigation and enforcement body dealing with farmers is fair, practical, independent and accountable.
Practical arrangements - Before the rally we will confirm:
• permission from Hobart City Council;
• permission and traffic requirements from TasPolice;
• any parliamentary precinct requirements;
• parking or staging areas for tractors;
• arrival and departure routes;
• media contact list;
• signs and banners;
• spokespersons; and
• a clear code of conduct for all participants.
Tone -
💪🏼 The rally will be peaceful, respectful and firm.
💪🏼 The message is not anti-environment. Farmers care deeply about land, animals and communities.
💪🏼 The message is that the current system is becoming unfair, impractical and damaging to the future of farming in Tasmania.
Desired outcome -
🙌🏻 A public commitment from the Premier and relevant Ministers to meet our key demands and begin a proper independent review of the laws, regulations and government practices that are making farming harder, less competitive and less secure.
