World Penguin Day: A critical moment for Emperor Penguins

The Emperor Penguin has just been reclassified as Endangered by the IUCN.

Why? Because the sea-ice they depend on to breed is disappearing.

In recent years, early sea-ice break-up has caused catastrophic breeding failures — with chicks lost before they can survive on their own. Scientists have already recorded a ~10% population decline, and projections suggest numbers could fall by half within this century.

This is not an isolated issue. It’s part of a wider shift affecting Antarctic ecosystems — from krill to seals — driven by rapid environmental change.

The Antarctic Science Foundation supports the research that helps us understand these changes and guides global action.

If you’re able to, please consider donating to support Antarctic science. Every dollar helps.

If not, sharing this post is a powerful way to make a difference.

🩵🦭 Happy International Seal Day! 🦭🩵
Today we celebrate these incredible marine mammals and the vital role they play in the Antarctic ecosystem. From the icy waters of Antarctica, seals like the Weddell seal and leopard seal help maintain balance in the food web by regulating fish and krill populations.

Did you know? Southern elephant seals can hold their breath for up to two hours, with only whales being able to last longer without breathing!

Let’s raise awareness, support conservation efforts, and ensure these amazing animals continue to thrive for generations to come.

🦭🌊 Happy International Seal Day! 🌊🦭

Today we celebrate the amazing seals that call places like Antarctica home. From the gentle Weddell seal to the powerful leopard seal, these marine mammals are essential to keeping ocean ecosystems healthy and balanced.

Antarctic seals play a vital role in the food web, helping regulate fish and krill populations while also acting as indicators of ocean health. But with climate change, melting sea ice, and increasing human impact, their environment is under threat.

Protecting seals means protecting the entire ecosystem they are part of—and ultimately, the health of our planet. 🌍💙

Let’s use today to raise awareness, support conservation efforts, and appreciate the incredible wildlife that shares our world.

Announcing the 2025 Mertz Fellowship Laureates

We are delighted to announce the recipients of the 2025 Mertz Fellowship, supporting outstanding collaborative research between Australia and Switzerland in Antarctic and Polar science.

Congratulations to our laureates:

🔹 Laura Crocetti
Project: Snow Accumulation Monitoring using GNSS-Interferometric Reflectometry for Antarctica
Home institution: ETH Zürich
Host institution: University of Tasmania

🔹 Sandeep Mohapatra
Project: Identifying tipping points in Antarctic Bottom Water formation in the Southern Ocean
Home institution: Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania
Host institution: University of Bern

These projects demonstrate the strength of international collaboration and the importance of cutting-edge research in improving our understanding of Antarctica and its global role.

🙏 We thank our partners Swiss Embassy and Swiss Polar Institute for their continued support.

🎉 Happy Antarctica Day! ❄️
Today marks 66 years since the signing of the Antarctic Treaty, a global commitment to peace, scientific cooperation, and environmental protection. With 58 nations working together, Antarctica remains a powerful example of what the world can achieve through collaboration. Here’s to another year of discovery and protection! 🌍💙

To celebrate, we’re excited to announce the recipients of the ASF 2025 Small Grants in Early Career Research in Antarctic Science, supporting early-career researchers across Australia and Europe. Congratulations to:

Ry Holland • Luca Zurli • Melanie Borup • Zhaohui Wang • Matthew Corkill • Marta Stentella • Jane Younger • Edel Sheerin

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters , including a major contribution from the Tasmanian Polar Network , this year’s grant round is helping advance research on climate change, sea-ice sampling, Antarctic species, atmospheric processes, and more.

🔬 These grants support work that strengthens global understanding of Antarctica and its crucial role in Earth’s future.

In less than 18 hours the Antarctic Science Foundation Team will take on the Point to Pinnacle in Hobart — the world’s toughest half marathon — to raise funds for Antarctic science.

Why? Because Antarctica matters to all of us. From climate stability to ocean health, what happens there affects the entire planet. 🌏❄️

We’re inviting our friends, supporters, and community to get behind the team — cheer us on, share the cause, or make a donation to help fund groundbreaking research in the world’s coldest continent.

The Antarctic Science Foundation extends its congratulations to Professor Tony Haymet who has been announced as Australia’s Chief Scientist. [ https://lnkd.in/gTaeuADu ].

Professor Haymet joined the Antarctic Science Foundation in 2020 and was appointed Chair of the Board in November 2021. He has made a significant contribution to the Foundation’s work in support of priority Antarctic and Southern Ocean science.

The ASF thanks Tony for his generous commitment of time as Chair, and although the ASF will miss his important contributions to the work of the ASF, we wish him all the best in his new and challenging role.

Professor Haymet rightfully resigned from the Board of the ASF upon his appointment as the Chief Scientist.

The Board announces the appointment of Ms Cheryl Walmsley as Chair of the ASF and warmly welcomes her into this role.

The ASF also wishes to announce the appointment of two new Board Members, Dr Indi Hodgson-Johnston (Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies), and Mr David Sinclair (Islands to Ice Travel Pty Ltd).
