# Not What You Think: A Different Starting Point for Gospel Conversations

In a culture where many people immediately disengage when they hear religious language, Not What You Think was created as a bridge between everyday life and the life-changing message of the gospel.

Many Australians have formed opinions about Christianity based on past experiences, media portrayals, stereotypes, or misunderstandings. As a result, traditional approaches to evangelism often struggle to gain a hearing. Not What You Think seeks to overcome these barriers by starting where people are, speaking in everyday language, and engaging with the real questions people ask about life, purpose, relationships, identity, suffering, hope, and meaning.

Our target audience is primarily people who would not normally enter a church, attend a Christian event, or actively seek spiritual answers. They may be sceptical, indifferent, disillusioned, or simply disconnected from faith. Yet beneath the surface, many are searching for purpose, belonging, significance, and a reason for living.

The goal of Not What You Think is not merely to start conversations. Every conversation, social media post, street interaction, market stall activity, and resource is designed to direct people to the website, [www.notwhatyouthink.au](http://www.notwhatyouthink.au).

The website serves as the central hub of the ministry. There visitors encounter a relational presentation of the uncompromised gospel of Jesus Christ. Rather than reducing Christianity to a set of rules or religious activities, the website presents God's invitation into relationship with Him and explores the unique calling and purpose for which every person was created. Visitors are encouraged not only to consider the claims of Christ but also to respond personally to His invitation.

To create pathways to the website, Not What You Think uses several forms of outreach.

Street engagement provides opportunities for authentic conversations with people in public spaces. Rather than beginning with religious arguments, we focus on listening, connecting, and discussing issues that matter to people. Through these conversations, individuals are invited to continue exploring deeper questions through the website.

Short social media reels, typically around 50 seconds long, form another important part of the strategy. These reels address contemporary issues and common life experiences in a way that captures attention and challenges assumptions. Each reel is designed to provoke thought and encourage viewers to visit the website for further exploration.

The ministry also operates a market stall featuring recycled books, encouragement cards, conversation starter cards, and puzzles. These items help create a welcoming environment where meaningful conversations can emerge naturally. For many people, a market setting feels safer and more approachable than a religious gathering, making it an ideal place to build relationships and establish trust.

At its heart, Not What You Think exists to help people reconsider what they think about God, faith, and themselves. Through genuine connection, practical engagement, and thoughtful conversations, we seek to guide people toward an encounter with the gospel and the discovery of the calling and purpose for which they were created.

Because sometimes the journey to Christ begins not with a sermon, but with a conversation, a puzzle, a book, a question—or the realisation that faith is not what they think.
