Hey friends, just a quick reminder about something I’m running in Manly that may interest some of you.

Group guitar lessons are starting next Tuesday, and the first group is now coming together.

It’s a relaxed and welcoming space to learn, play, and connect with others through music.

If you’ve been curious about learning guitar, or used to play and would like to get back into it, this could be a great fit.

How it works:
Small groups (max 8 per group), so everyone gets attention
Structured teaching, you’ll understand why chords and music work, not just memorise shapes
Beginner friendly, while still valuable for more experienced players
Supportive atmosphere focused on confidence and enjoyment

💲 $20 per session
🎸 18+ | All levels welcome
🤝 Run through Local Kind Manly, with half of each session supporting local community initiatives

If it sounds like something you’d enjoy, or you’d just like more info, feel free to comment on this post at Lyceum Guitar Academy or send them a message anytime.

A huge thank you to Manly Community Pre-School for today’s generous donation of non-perishable food items.

After seeing our recent call-out for food donations, the preschool organised a community food drive and invited families to give what they could. The kindness and generosity shown by parents, staff, and children has been incredibly heartwarming.

It means so much to see the Northern Beaches community come together to support our most vulnerable members. And with the Pre-School sitting right behind us here in Manly, it feels even more special knowing our neighbours are thinking of us.

This food will go directly into our Produce Pantry, where it will be distributed to individuals and families experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, financial hardship, and food insecurity across the Northern Beaches.

Donations like this also create a sense of dignity and care. They remind people that their community sees them, supports them, and hasn’t forgotten them during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Thank you, Manly Community Pre-School. Your support means we can continue providing essential food relief to people who need it most.

💚 CASE STUDY: Helping a Mother Rebuild Safety and Hope 💚

When a mother of two daughters first connected with LocalKind, she was living in a home shaped by fear, coercive control, emotional abuse, and financial abuse. Like many women experiencing domestic violence, she felt overwhelmed, isolated, and unsure how she could safely move forward while protecting her children.

Over the next six months, LocalKind’s Domestic & Family Violence team walked alongside the family every step of the way. Through trauma-informed case management, we helped her engage with the Staying Home Leaving Violence program so she and her children could remain safely in their home while the perpetrator was legally removed. We also supported her to access Victim Services, the Leaving Violence Program, and pro bono family law assistance through LocalKind’s legal service partnership.
Our team helped gather evidence to successfully obtain and uphold an AVO, supported her through court appearances and breach reporting, arranged lock changes to improve safety, and developed detailed safety plans for the family. We also advocated for school fees to be waived due to financial hardship and provided ongoing material aid and emotional support during some of the hardest months of her life.

Today, the family is living in greater safety and stability. The mother has regained control over her finances, returned to employment, and is beginning to rebuild her confidence and independence. Her daughters are now in a safer environment, with pathways into counselling support when the time is right.

This is the impact of compassionate, wraparound support — helping women and children move from fear and crisis toward safety, dignity, and hope. 💚

For National Volunteer Week, our clients decided they wanted to give back to our volunteers. They did this by forming a band and, in no less than eight weeks, performed two beautiful renditions of Take Me Home, Country Roads and Lean on Me.

They performed as part of our National Volunteer Week event on Monday. The performance was highly anticipated by our volunteers and was by far the highlight of the event.

At the end of the event, one of our clients explained to a volunteer that they “wanted to sing Lean on Me specifically because our volunteers are the people they lean on every day”.

We think that says it all. Thank you to all LocalKind volunteers for letting our clients lean on you.

P.S The band is called the Howlers and they smashed it ❤️

Last night, LocalKind attended a National Volunteer Week Award Ceremony hosted by Federal MP Dr Sophie Scamps . We nominated Simon Harrison for his program, Fishing Club, which he runs out of our Manly Drop-in service in collaboration with Roses in the Ocean.

We are incredibly proud of the community Simon has built with our clients, many of whom have experienced homelessness, suicidal ideation, mental health challenges, and isolation. Through a love of fishing, Simon has brought a group of men together who now feel they have a strong sense of community and a safe place to share their thoughts.

Congratulations on the award, Simon. You are a gift to the Northern Beaches community.

Last night, we celebrated National Volunteer Week at the stunning Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club , who generously donated their beautiful venue for the occasion.

LocalKind is fortunate to have 60 incredible volunteers across our two offices who show up week after week, giving their time, compassion, and energy to support men and women experiencing domestic violence, homelessness, refugee settlement and multicultural services, and financial hardship.

We know that volunteering can be deeply rewarding, but it can also weigh heavily on the heart. For that, we are eternally grateful. Your kindness restores hope to the most vulnerable members of the Northern Beaches community.

We hope you felt all the love in the room last night. Happy National Volunteer Week to volunteers everywhere ❤️

Help Us Support People Facing Homelessness and Domestic Violence on the Northern Beaches

Our stock room is currently running low on non-perishable food items, and we would be incredibly grateful for any support.

At LocalKind, we support some of the most vulnerable members of the Northern Beaches community, including people experiencing homelessness, domestic and family violence, and financial hardship.

We understand that the cost of living is challenging for many people right now. But if you are able to add just one extra item to your grocery shop this week, you can be sure it will go directly to someone in our community who needs it most.

For many of the people we assist, access to basic food items can make an enormous difference. A box of cereal means children have breakfast before school. Long-life milk, pasta sauce, and noodles can provide simple, nourishing meals when money is tight and options are limited.

Items we are always in need of include:

Cereal
Pasta sauce
Long-life milk
Muesli bars
Cup noodles
Donations can be dropped off at: LocalKind, 52 Raglan Street, Manly, Monday to Friday 9am-4pm. Thank you for helping us support the Northern Beaches community.

Today, we were bowled over with gratitude when Wakehurst Public School presented us with 20 sleeping bags for our clients who are sleeping rough on the Northern Beaches.

Thank you to all the students and their families who donated. We want you to know that these sleeping bags will provide a much-needed sense of warmth, safety and security for our clients as they try to sleep during the colder months.

We are incredibly fortunate to have your support. Thank you from all the clients and staff at LocalKind.

May is Domestic Violence Prevention Month and we want to highlight the incredible work our Domestic Violence team does, this year alone we have helped 77 women escape violence and while this number keeps growing we remain motivated and prepared.

In addition to providing legal support, crisis case management and advocacy, we are also committed to making a difference on a systemic level. In June the LocalKind Domestic Violence team will be meeting with MP Jodie Harrison (Minister for Domestic Violence Prevention and Sexual Assault) to discuss their proposed legislation reforms around information sharing. LocalKind is leading the charge on how our state shares information crucial to keeping victim survivors safe 👏🏼

This week is Neighbourhood Centre Week. This year’s theme, Your Place to Connect, recognises that every day across NSW Neighbourhood and Community Centres open their doors to welcome individuals and families, offering a safe space for connection and support. We know that Neighbourhood and Community Centres have long served as the heartbeat of local communities across NSW.

These community-led, not-for-profit organisations like LocalKind provide a trusted, accessible, and responsive presence in the places where people live, work, and connect. From metropolitan neighbourhoods to remote towns, Neighbourhood and Community Centres work alongside local people to create safe, inclusive, and connected communities that support individuals and families to thrive.

The recent Shared Commitment to Collaboration for Neighbourhood and Community Centres in NSW honours this work and acknowledges the important partnership between NSW Communities and Justice, the Local Community Services Association, and Neighbourhood and Community Centres. It is a vision for future collaboration, and we look forward to continuing to work together to meet community needs, prioritising connectedness, self-determination and belonging.

We would like to recognise the people, projects, and everyday moments in Neighbourhood and Community Centres that bring communities together and make neighbourhoods stronger, kinder, and more connected. Thank you for your work.

Enjoy this year’s Neighbourhood Centre Week!
