Surf Life Saving NSW // The NSW Government's Shark Management Program is expanding, with extended hours for drone shark surveillance beginning tomorrow, 1 September 2026.

As daylight hours increase, drones will now operate from 6:15am to 5:00pm, ensuring full daylight coverage.

Drone flying hours change throughout the year in line with seasonal daylight. We encourage beachgoers, clubs and local communities to familiarise themselves with the 2026/27 drone flying schedule.

It's all part of the NSW Government's $120 million investment into shark management, which saw a major scale up of drone coverage in July this year, across beaches in Sydney and along the NSW coastline.

Council this week endorsed an urgency motion to support animals in our area in the face of H5N1.

Manly's penguins, of which there are only a small handful of breeding pairs, will be vaccinated in conjunction with NPAWS.

Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty said there had been 16 confirmed cases of H5N1 across the state so far, including one in the Illawarra, confirmed on Thursday night. So far in NSW, only birds have been infected, unlike in South Australia, where there have been cases in mammals including seals and a red fox.

“We’re also asking people with backyard chickens and with pet birds to now have plans in place to protect those birds and to stop any risk of spread,” Moriarty said. “If you’ve got backyard chooks, we’re asking you to make sure that you keep their food clean and under shelter, keep their water clean and under shelter. Some people who are out in the regions might be using dam water for their backyard chooks. Please don’t do that for the moment. Use clean water.

A wonderful night celebrating our local NSW SES volunteers and the extraordinary service they give to our community.

A special shout-out to Frank Messina from the Warringah-Pittwater Unit, recognised with the National Emergency Medal and a service award. Frank told me it was actually his son who first got him involved in the SES — and many years later, they are both still serving the community. 🧡

There were some remarkable milestones celebrated across our local units, including 35, 25, 15 and 5 years of service, as well as recognition for members who responded to the devastating floods between 2021 and 2024.

It is particularly significant here on the Northern Beaches. The NSW State Disaster Mitigation Plan projects that by 2060 our LGA will have the highest average annual loss to the built environment in NSW — around $969 million a year, predominantly from coastal hazards.

So it was encouraging to hear our local State MPs Michael Regan and Jacqui Scruby speak about working towards a sustainable solution to properly fund emergency services locally.

Most importantly, thank you to these tremendous volunteers — the people who leave dinners, birthdays, Christmases, beds and families when the call comes in.

Our opening hours are
Monday & Weds 7am – 4.30pm
Tuesday & Thurs 7am – 3.00pm
Friday 11.00am – 2.00pm
People may be in and out other times.

Many people are in crisis accommodation without cooking facilities, are ill or frail, so we deliver them meals that are ready to eat.
