Michelle Howells works with CTST - Community Transport Services Tasmania and will be joining us to share how CTST is changing lives across Tasmania. CTST supports older Tasmanians and people with disability to stay independent, connected and active - all with the help of everyday volunteers who give a little of their time to make a big difference.

She’ll talk about:
- How transport can be the key to reducing loneliness
- Why volunteers are at the heart of CTST’s impact
- The surprising health benefits of volunteering for both parties
- The many ways people can get involved

Across Australia, loneliness is becoming one of the biggest health challenges of ageing. When driving stops, connection often stops too. CTST’s work is grounded in a commitment to providing quality, supportive and affordable transport and care services that reflect people’s choices and respond to the needs of their community. At the heart of this is a simple vision: that everyone has access to excellent community transport and care.

Michelle will share stories of how CTST’s service transforms lives and how volunteers play a vital role in keeping communities strong.

Recently the Rotary Club of Lindisfarne had an excellent presentation from Campbell, aged 15, a participant in one of the Windeward Bound Trust's Youth Development Sailing Voyages. Now we will get the chance to hear from the Captain of the STV Windeward Bound, Sarah Parry OAM.

Sarah is a former Royal Australian Navy member, the 2017 International Sail Trainer of the Year, a Tasmanian Senior Australian of the Year finalist, a Paul Harris Fellow and a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia.

In 1993 she established the Windeward Bound Trust, with a commitment to the relief of helplessness, the development of work and social skills and the delivery of personal growth experiences for young people.

The Windeward Bound is a tall wooden sailing ship built by volunteers and is crewed and maintained mainly by its volunteer base.

Joining a Youth Development Sail Training Voyage, young people aged 14-18 learn the skills to sail a square-rigged tall ship. They keep watch and take the helm, help in the galley, learn to navigate using the ship’s charts and climb the 24-metre mast to set and furl the sails. They learn how to communicate and work as a team.

Melody Towns is a social entrepreneur and advocate whose work focuses on combating human trafficking and supporting vulnerable women. After hearing firsthand accounts of women and children being trafficked and exploited, she was deeply moved to act. What began as a small fundraising event with friends grew into a movement driven by the belief that ordinary people can play a role in confronting modern slavery and supporting those affected by it.

Melody went on to establish Be Hers, a charity dedicated to raising awareness of human trafficking while providing practical support for women who have experienced violence, exploitation or social vulnerability.

Be Hers operates community programs, mentoring services and social enterprises that provide training, employment pathways and safe spaces for women—many of whom are refugees or survivors of trauma. Through these initiatives, Melody and her team aim not only to address the harms of exploitation but also to restore dignity, independence and hope, empowering women to build stable futures for themselves and their families.
