Artist Opportunity: Kensington Town Hall

The Kensington Town Hall Place and Space Residency is a City of Melbourne collaboration between Creative Arts Grants and the Kensington Neighbourhood Team.

The residency invites an artist to develop a vibrant, site-responsive activation that engages thoughtfully with the local community and responds to the character of Kensington Town Hall and its surrounding precinct.

Key dates:
+ EOIs open
+ Walk-through of the space: Thursday 15 October 2026 (10-11am) or Friday 16 October (3-4pm) Register via the link below
+ Applications close: 11:59pm 29 October 2026
+ Notification to applicants: December 2026
+ Residency dates: 11 January to 3 October 2027

Key info:
+ Number of residencies available: one
+ Duration: 10 months. Artists are required to be in residence for a minimum of two days per week.
+ Artist fee payment: $10,000
+ Rent: There is no cost to successful applicants. Rent is valued at $5,000.
+ Work with local community to help shape the work – connection to local community provided by City of Melbourne Neighbourhoods Team.
+ Dates: 11 January 2027 to 3 October 2027
+ Public outcome presentation: between 18 September and 3 October 2027, with the option to extend the display period beyond these dates or from 18 September 2027.

The Kensington Market was established to showcase the local talent and craftmanship that is alive and thriving in the Kensington and Flemington areas and surrounding precincts. Kensington Market runs once a month on Sundays until December.

Held monthly at the well positioned and easily accessible Kensington Town Hall, the market provides artists with a wonderful platform to display their craft, perform and be an integral part of the artist and maker community.

Whilst meandering around the beautiful historical building, and carefully curated stalls is a lovely way to pass the time, this boutique market also offers the public the opportunity to engage with makers and learn about their craft. ‘

With an eclectic platform ranging from fresh produce, designer fashion, ceramics, textile craft and an array of visual creations, all encompassed in an environment filled with live music, we are sure that your visit will be an enjoyable one.

Artist Opportunity → Applications for ILBIJERRI Theatre Company’s 2026-2028 BlackStage artist development program are now open!

BlackStage offers emerging First Peoples theatre practitioners based in Victoria mentoring across all aspects of theatre production, including set, costume, lighting and sound design, production management and touring.

The program involves a series of paid workshops and secondments that will match participants with skilled mentors in their chosen creative or technical field.

Recently presented at Kensington Town Hall → The Human Algorithm

A three-channel immersive video installation exploring the impact of artificial intelligence on human behaviour and cognition.

Maximalist in style and crafted with digital and generative AI tools, weaving its narrative through text sampling that mirrors the learned intelligence and borrowed poetics of large language models. The Human Algorithm was designed to bring interconnected dimensions together into a cohesive, accessible experience. Offering audiences a more holistic understanding of the risks posed, the values at stake, and the collective engagement required to respond to these emerging technologies.

About the artist:
Sarah-Jane Woulahan is a filmmaker and artist with a decades-long practice at the intersection of moving image, technology, and political imagination. Her work is driven by a persistent interest in what cinema can do when it moves beyond the screen, into immersive environments, experimental forms, and the spaces where fiction and reality become unstable.

Join us at the Kensington Market this Sunday to meet talented local vendors offering a range of handmade items and delicious food.

Every month at Kensington Town Hall, the market is a platform for artists and other creatives platform to display their wares alongside live music and great company.

Enjoy a leisurely day getting to know your neighbours, with coffee, delicious food and lots more to shop and browse.

From 10am-3pm in the Main Hall. All ages, and dogs (on lead) are welcome. Entry is free.
