🐾 STEM Students Get Out in the Community!
Today, Ms Aasen’s STEM class headed out into the community to put up nest boxes as part of their assessment task.
The project was completed in partnership with the Katherine Savanna Glider Project, run by Mr Hennessy. A big thank you to Katherine Men’s Shed and Mr Hennessy for providing the nest box kits and equipment needed for installation.
Our students had a fantastic time getting hands-on and putting their STEM learning into action! 🔨🌿
A huge thank you also to @
Katherine Country Club for allowing us to install the nest boxes around the golf course.
Now we wait… 🤞 Hopefully, in around four weeks, we’ll see some Savanna Gliders taking up residence in their new homes! 🐾💚

Today is National Threatened Species Day, it’s been 90 years since the last known Tasmanian Tiger died in Hobart Zoo. It’s a day to commemorate the many amazing species we share our landscape with are under threat including our Savanna Gliders. Our director Thomas has been working with the Katherine Men’s Shed to finish our 2026 nest box order which will be deployed during the build up we’ll have close to 20 needing new homes in October so if you would like to offer your property for a nestbox please let us know.

Our director Thomas visited the Katherine Girl Guides with an update on the project. The Guides have been amazing associates of the project having painted a dozen nestboxes and are keen to help paint and assemble more this year. It was great to see them commemorate the project with a photo wall on the side of the guide hall. For anyone interested the Katherine Girl Guides meet every Tuesday at 5pm.

Mid-Year Update

The past six months have been incredibly busy for the Katherine Savanna Glider Project!

We’ve installed almost 25 nest boxes across the Big Rivers Region, with an exciting milestone in May—the first recorded breeding pair of Savanna Gliders using one of our nest boxes at Stuart Estate.

We’ve also loved working with our local community here in Katherine. Our Junior Rangers built and painted seven nest boxes and installed two at Cutta Cutta Caves, while we’ve recently expanded beyond Katherine with our first nest box installed near Beswick through their Learning on Country program.

There’s even more to come, with an exciting nest box project we’ll be announcing soon!

A huge thank you to our friends at the Katherine Men’s Shed, who are helping us build our next 40 nest boxes. If you’d like a nest box installed on your property, send us a message or email.

Thank you for your continued support of the Katherine Savanna Glider Project and our work with this threatened species!

Well we’ve hit 2026 running at the Katherine Savanna Glider Project. Over the weekend our director Thomas and two volunteers Bryn and Deb visited two nestboxes to check if they were being used Savanna Gliders no signs yet but an adjacent hollow had a nest so fingers crossed. They then went to a private property on the road to the gorge and put up two new boxes. Our nestbox network continues to grow if you’re interested in hosting a box or helping out please send an email to [email protected] or send us a message.

Well we’re wrapped up our work for 2025 what an incredible year this has been with the launching of the Katherine Savanna Glider Project. This year we’ve had 8 surveys and installed 15 nest boxes with another 6 ready to go when we return in 2026. If you’re interested in installing a nestbox please send an email to [email protected]

Last week our director Thomas visited the Strathallan Glider Sanctuary in northern Victoria which is a captive breeding program for the Squirrel Glider a close relative of the Savanna Gldier which is in decline in Victoria. Here they’ve installed over 300 nestboxes along the Campaspe and Murray Rivers for Squirrel Gliders to live, much to learn here.

See you all in the New Year

More boxes have been going up in the past few weeks. Today we installed one at Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre in an ideal habitat tree for Savanna Gliders. A big thanks to the staff there for allowing us to do this. Savanna Gliders have been spotted in the bushland around Katherine East so fingers crossed we see signs of gldiers living in the box soon.
