Did you know most Australian nursing students graduate with as little as one mental health unit and minimal time in an actual mental health setting?

The ACMHN has released a position statement calling for stronger mental health preparation in undergraduate nursing degrees. Around 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental health condition in any given year, so every nurse will care for people in mental distress at some point, no matter their chosen specialty.

We are calling for compulsory mental health theory and clinical placement hours in designated mental health settings, taught by nurses with specialist qualifications, along with expanded pathways for students who want to specialise early.

Up to 12% of Aussies are estimated to identify as LGBTQIA+

Significantly more LGBTQIA+ Aussies (compared to heteros*xual Aussies) have struggled with their mental health

Our very own co-founder, Youth and Peer Support Worker is a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community

Happy Pride Month all! 💖🏳️‍🌈

The flag in this image is the Progress Flag, a 2018 update to the classic rainbow pride flag we all know. Created by Daniel Quasar, it was designed as an umbrella flag for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community, as the additional colours explicitly represent important members of our community who are too often overlooked. 🫂

The progress pride flag features the iconic blue, pink, and white of the transgender flag, to represent and appreciate our trans family. The black and brown stripes represent LGBTQ+ people of colour, with the black stripe holding the extra meaning of acknowledging those living with AIDS. The chevron shape of these added colours represents moving forward. ➡️💞

Pride marches started as protests; while we continue to push to be seen and heard, we also make room now for celebration. Whether a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally, this pride month, let's all do our best to learn, empathise, and celebrate. 🤗🎉

On the 28th of June 1969, The Stonewall Inn (New York City) was raided by police, during a time when homos*xuality was illegal in the United States, and LGBTQIA+ people were frequently targeted, harassed and
abused.
Staff and patrons were fed up with this constant discrimination and harassment towards the LGBTQIA+ community, and together resisted the raid. This turned into a violent protest,
which became known as The Stonewall Riots, and that became a major turning point in the modern LGBTQIA+ rights movement worldwide.

Today is IDAHOBIT — the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, discrimination against inters*x people and Transphobia. 🌈

A global moment to stand against discrimination and come together for equality!

Did you know:
• 65 UN member States still criminalise consensual same-s*x s*xual acts
• At least 62 restrict freedom of expression based on s*xual orientation, gender identity and expression, and s*x characteristics
• Legal gender recognition based on self-identification exists in just 18 countries
• Only 9 countries prohibit unnecessary medical interventions on inters*x children
• In Australia, it’s still legal to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people in religious schools and by faith-based service providers

Behind every statistic are people in our communities being denied safety, recognition and equality.

While our experiences may differ across the world, our hope is shared: to live freely, equally and without discrimination - and to be accepted for who we are.

Happy International Nurses Day.

Mental health nurses deal with some of the most complex and emotionally demanding work in healthcare, and they do it with skill, compassion, and commitment. It's a specialty that doesn't always get the spotlight it deserves.
