Red Tag members recently gathered for the Club’s Annual General Meeting. While the AGM is an essential part of the Club calendar, it is not always the most exciting event; this year, however, was different. Those in attendance witnessed a special tribute to Red Tagger Barney Stephens, who was presented with the Club’s highest honour of Life Membership, ‘… in recognition of Exceptional Service and Enduring Commitment to the Red Tag Fly Fishers’. The award is fitting recognition of Barney’s many contributions, including his service as club president, committee member, fly tying instructor, and much more.

As President Stuart Murphy summed up so well, “… the continued and sustained commitment in sharing his passion, his time and supporting others continues to be the very best of what a club member can be.”

Congratulations Barney and on behalf of Red Tag members, thank you for your service.

‘Fly Tying 101’
Class was in session for fly tying this week and our development peeps were in good hands with Barney demonstrating up the front and lots of Red Taggers helping out. The concentration was impressive and apparently these flies are guaranteed to catch trout … eventually.
Welcome to the wonderful world of fly tying everyone!

A chilly morning did nothing to dampen spirits as Red Tag Fly Fishers warmly welcomed participants in this year’s Development Program to their first session at the casting pool. Over the next four weeks, the group will build their skills in casting, knot tying and fly tying before putting their new abilities to the test at a trout farm. We’re excited to watch their confidence grow and their fly fishing journey begin. Welcome to the wonderful world of fly fishing!

On Wednesday night 1 July, Red Tag will be holding our Monthly General meeting and Activity at the clubrooms in the Pavilion at Yarra Bend Park.

After a short General Meeting, Red Tags’ own Blake Davis will present on nature and its impact on wellbeing.

Fresh from his success in the Bellarine Fly Fishers' Association Inshore Fly Fishing Competition, Blake will share insights from his recent Masters thesis:“How exposure to nature affects people’s perception of feeling restored”—something fly fishers can certainly relate to.

IDAHOBIT Event Wrap Up
A huge thank you to all our members for making our IDAHOBIT ‘Catch a Rainbow’ event such a standout success. Once again, our club showcased the very best of fly fishing and community spirit. More than 70 people joined us for a fantastic day featuring three rotating sessions—fly tying, an introduction to fly fishing, and casting—with the fishing simulator proving a crowd favourite. With plenty of food, great weather, and strong interest right across the day, every session ran smoothly and reflected the club at its very best.
It was a true team effort, and the positive feedback has been overwhelming. We’ve heard how welcoming, well organised, and enthusiastic our members were in sharing their passion for fly fishing. Thank you again to everyone who contributed—you helped create an event that was memorable, inclusive, and a real credit to the club 🌈❤️
