🌏 $25,000 to help change lives in Giligil, Viviran village.

A remarkable act of generosity is helping bring a new world of opportunity to the people of Viviran village, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea, on the land portion of Giligil.

The Dowling Family Foundation has generously donated $25,000 to support the Giligil Resource Centre, a Rotary Brisbane Water-supported project working to improve access to education, technology and essential services for this rural community.

The funding will help provide solar power, satellite internet, community Wi-Fi and computer equipment β€” connecting the people of Viviran and the surrounding villages of Giligil. The Giligil Centre, located in Viviran village, serves the community with educational resources, training, communication and opportunities far beyond their village.

On Monday 24 August, the generosity of the Dowling Family Foundation was formally recognised in Brisbane, with Steven Gagau, Rotary Brisbane Water International Service Director and RAWCS Project Manager, presenting the Foundation with a Certificate of Appreciation and Letter of Appreciation.

The presentation was attended by Stan Mogg, Stephen Dowling and Robyn Jones of the Dowling Family Foundation, and witnessed by ENB Queensland community members Angie Kolita Payne and Bonnie Sahin Tamtu, who support the Rotary project. It was followed by a luncheon celebrating the partnership between the Dowling Family Foundation and Rotary Brisbane Water, and the shared vision behind this important project.

For Steven, who grew up in the village where the Giligil Centre is located, the project is deeply personal. The Resource Centre was completed in 2024 and officially opened to the community in January 2025 β€” this latest support will help take the Centre another significant step forward.

πŸ’» One connection can create thousands of opportunities.
β˜€οΈ One solar-powered Centre can open the door to education.
🌏 And one generous partnership can help connect an entire community to the world.

Rotary Brisbane Water extends its sincere thanks to the Dowling Family Foundation for believing in the vision and investing in the future of Giligil.

Together, we are connecting communities, creating opportunities and building a brighter future. ❀️

πŸ“š September is Basic Education & Literacy Month!

At Rotary Brisbane Water, we believe literacy is the foundation everything else is built on β€” it opens the door to education, opportunity and independence.

This month we're shining a light on the power of reading and learning, both here at home and through the projects we support internationally β€” like the Giligil Resource Centre in Papua New Guinea, where access to books, technology and training is changing lives.

Learning opens doors. Literacy transforms lives. Together, we empower people through education. ❀️

A fabulous day of collaboration and connection at the University of NSW, bringing together Rotarians, charitable organisations, academic professionals and others with a shared interest in East Africa, particularly Uganda.
It was a wonderful opportunity to share experiences, explore ideas and build connections with like-minded people working to support communities across the East African region.
These meetings will become a regular opportunity to come together, collaborate, share knowledge and explore new ways of working together to create meaningful and sustainable outcomes in East Africa. Brisbane Water Rotarians attended representing our RAWCS projects.

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Our Patron, Ken Duncan! πŸŽ‰

Rotary Club of Brisbane Water is proud to congratulate our esteemed patron, Ken Duncan, on the release of his stunning new book, God Bless America.

The book is the culmination of decades spent photographing across all 50 US states, and captures landscapes and moments that reflect America's natural beauty, rich heritage, enduring faith and indomitable spirit.

Ken's generosity and support of our Central Coast community have meant a great deal to Rotary Brisbane Water over the years, and we're delighted to see his artistry reach this extraordinary milestone. We encourage our members and friends β€” particularly those with connections in the United States β€” to explore this special release and help us spread the word.

🌏 Rotary Brisbane Water | August 2026

What a month for our club! Here's a wrap-up of what we've been up to:

πŸŽ‰ Helping Hands Cocktail Party a huge success! Our Australiana-themed fundraiser on August 15 at Umina Surf Club, held in partnership with Peninsula Lions, raised valuable funds for local domestic violence prevention programs. Huge thanks to Lions for catering and entertainment, the band Great Southern Land for keeping everyone dancing, and a massive shoutout to Bendigo Bank Ettalong for their generous $4000 donation!

πŸ’ͺ Anytime Fitness Woy Woy flexes its humanitarian muscle β€” our sponsor (owned by our own treasurer Mark Simpson and daughter Carla) has donated thousands of dollars to Divine Mercy Montessori School in Uganda, funding new toilet facilities and a PA system for the school. Wonderful to see Central Coast generosity making a real difference overseas.

🏫 Building better classrooms in Uganda β€” through our RAWCS partnerships, we're helping Global Primary School move from dirt-floor classrooms to safe, proper learning spaces, and supporting a Montessori Teacher Training and Preschool project in Kampala.
β˜• Decaf keeps growing β€” our Dementia Cafe continues to be a much-loved space for people living with dementia and their carers, with almost 20 participants at our last session. Held 2nd & 4th Mondays, 10am–noon, Umina CWA Hall.

β›³ Charity Golf Day β€” Monday November 2 at Everglades Golf Club Woy Woy. Get your team together for our biggest fundraiser of the year β€” all funds go to youth and family projects. $100/player, includes breakfast, golf, lunch and on-course drinks. Register: [email protected]

🌏 ROTARY RESPONDS: SUPPORTING NEPAL FLOOD RECOVERY πŸ‡³πŸ‡΅

Communities across Nepal are facing the devastating impact of recent widespread flooding, with families losing homes, possessions and livelihoods.

Damage to water and sanitation infrastructure is also creating serious concerns about the spread of waterborne disease.

Through RAWCS National, Rotary is supporting projects and Rotary Clubs in Nepal that are working directly with affected families and communities as they begin the difficult process of recovery and rebuilding.

πŸ’™ Your support can make a difference.
Funds raised will help Rotary-led projects provide assistance where it is needed and support Nepalese communities on the road to recovery.

Every contribution, large or small, will help communities rebuild their lives and restore hope for the future.

Together, we can help Nepal recover and rebuild.

Dolly Parton 1946–2026 πŸ’•πŸ“š

Rotary Brisbane Water joins Rotarians around the world in mourning the passing of Dolly Parton β€” an extraordinary entertainer, philanthropist and champion of children and literacy.

For Rotary, Dolly will be remembered not only for her remarkable music and generosity, but for her partnership with Rotary International through her beloved Imagination Library.

Since 2009, Rotary clubs have worked alongside Dolly’s organisation to help bring the gift of books to children, supporting early literacy and encouraging a lifelong love of reading. Through the Imagination Library, children receive a new, age-appropriate book each month from birth until the age of five.

What makes Dolly’s work so special is its simplicity. She believed that every child should have the opportunity to grow up with books, regardless of their family’s circumstances. Her vision turned that belief into a global programme that has placed millions of books into the hands of young children.

Dolly also understood the spirit of Rotary β€” that when people come together with a shared commitment to helping others, they can create lasting change.

Her legacy extends far beyond the stage. It lives on in the children discovering their first stories, the families reading together and the communities helping make those moments possible.

At Rotary Brisbane Water, we are proud to remember Dolly for the joy she brought to the world, but also for the lives she touched through service, generosity and a belief in the power of a simple book.

Thank you, Dolly. Your voice may have fallen silent, but the stories you helped put into the hands of children will continue to be read for generations.

Rest peacefully. πŸ’•πŸ“–
