Meet Pauline: nine years of making a difference at James Nash House.

James Nash House is home to the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network's (NALHN) Forensic Mental Health Service — a specialised facility supporting people with serious mental illness who are involved in the justice system. It is a place that calls for patience, sensitivity and dedication.

Pauline brings all three. Pauline has volunteered with the Northern Healthcare Volunteer Association at NALHN week after week for more than 21 years. Around nine of them have been at James Nash House, where she leads a craft group for consumers to come together, to create with their hands.

"There is nothing more joyous than seeing group participants evolve week to week," she shares.

Volunteers like Pauline show what community care really looks like.

This National Volunteer Week (18-24 May) we are shining a light on volunteers across NALHN, who dedicate their time supporting our community.

First up, let’s celebrate Doug, a valued volunteer at Lyell McEwin Hospital.

After losing his mum, Doug began volunteering in February 2025 with the Northern Healthcare Volunteer Association, turning his own experience into compassion for others.

From guiding patients around the hospital, to sharing a friendly chat, Doug helps make the hospital feel a little less overwhelming.

“I really enjoy visiting the wards on Fridays with the library trolley, delivering books 📚 or magazines to patients, you get a lot of people that just want some company,” he says.

Doug says volunteering brings him purpose and connection, “visitors are very appreciative of the help, it’s a very thankful job within the hospital.”

Thinking about volunteering? Take Doug’s advice and give it a go. You might just find it’s one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.
