ARA - Australian Refugee Association ARA provides advice, advocacy & practical support to help newly arrived refugees and migrants settle into their new lives in Australia.

Since the Australian Refugee Association (ARA) was first created as the Indo-China Refugee Association in 1975 it has expanded its work to include people escaping persecution in any country. We use a broad definition of a refugee to include others such as asylum seekers, their families, and migrants in need. ARA assists people to move forward from the refugee experience, rebuild their lives and their community, live in dignity and become contributing members of the Australian community. We also work with the Australian public, deepening their understanding of the refugee experience and involving people in practical ways such volunteering, donations and advocacy. While ARA has received various grants and funds to carry out programs in accordance with government policy, it relies on private support for much of its work. ARA places a high priority on its advocacy role for individual cases and its contribution to developing refugee policy. ARA is governed by a Board of Management whose members are elected from the community. We provide services using both paid staff and volunteers. There are currently over 200 active volunteers working for ARA. A third of these volunteers are active in the Family Support Program which links new arrivals with members of the community to provide support and assistance. Our Walk-in Service is also staffed by volunteers and provides advice, information and referrals plus material and financial assistance for those in need. ARA is a non-government organisation and registered charity. As the longest serving organisation assisting the settlement of refugees in South Australia, ARA has evolved and adapted over time to meet the many and varied challenges created by each new refugee crisis around the world.

We recently celebrated multiple unforgettable showcases filled with cultural fashion parades, traditional music, spoken-word poetry, and amazing multicultural food - all led by the inspiring students of the ARA Youth Ambassador Program! πŸ₯» πŸ‘˜ 🍲 🎬

A massive congratulations to the Youth Ambassadors from all participating schools. Your hard work, passion, and leadership truly shone through! πŸ‘βœ¨

Celebrating over a decade of tradition in the Northern Suburbs, these events wouldn't be possible without the dedication of our mentors, teachers, school and communities.

We are also deeply grateful for the generous support of the Australian Department of Home Affairs, the Milner Road Foundation, and our donors.

A huge shoutout to the partner schools keeping this tradition alive: Mark Oliphant College, Salisbury High, Salisbury East High, Craigmore High, Playford International, Parafield Gardens High, Kildare College, and St Aloysius College! 🏫

Finally, a special thank you to Loviness, Youth Activities Coordinator, for her beautiful words.

Celebrating the incredible cultural richness and deep community connection at the Unmasked African Festival 2026! 🌍✨ It’s a true privilege to see South Australia come together to connect and share in the vibrant tapestry of African music, dance, food, fashion, and art.

We had an amazing time at Victoria Square! Thank you to everyone who joined us for such a wonderful cultural experience. A special thank you to the African Communities Council of South Australia for the invitation.

Courage, connection, and culture! 🀝 For over a decade, ARA’s Youth Ambassador showcases have been bringing students together in north Adelaide schools, and the 2026 season is already making an incredibly positive impact.

Salisbury East High School recently started this events with traditional music, cultural fashion parades, and speeches. During the event, one student shared:

β€œSkin colour does not make anyone less than another. Think about your actions and words: if you wouldn’t do or say them in front of the principal or your parents, don’t do them to someone else."

The Youth Ambassador Program helps students build real-world skills in public speaking, event planning, and cross-cultural communication - proving what is possible when young people are trusted to lead. We are incredibly proud!
