Currumbin Wildlife Hospital opened in 1989 and has grown to be one of the busiest wildlife hospitals in the world. It admits almost 14,000 animals a year, including almost 500 koalas. There have been over 140,000 admissions in the hospital over the last 20 years and this figure continues to rise. The Currumbin Wildlife Hospital relies on community donations to continue its vital work.

These Pelicans were caught up in the recent Port of Brisbane fuel oil spill, and after weeks of care at the Hospital, they’re back in the wild where they belong.

Oil is a huge problem for Seabirds. It breaks down the waterproofing in their feathers, leaving them cold, struggling to float and at risk of swallowing oil when they preen. Spills affect a whole range of marine wildlife and the wider ocean ecosystem.

After a few weeks of careful cleaning, rest and rehab, all four regained their strength and waterproofing, and they’ve now been released back home around Moreton Bay.

Spot an oil or fuel spill in the water? Please report it straight away. If you find an oiled Bird, don’t try to clean it yourself. Call a wildlife rescue group instead.

This tiny Echidna Puggle weighs just 133g 💚

The Puggle’s mother was hit by a car and sadly didn’t survive, but the 4-week-old Puggle did. After a check-up with the vet team, it’s now in foster care with Tweed Valley Wildlife Carers, where it will stay until it’s old enough to survive on its own in the wild.

Every patient that comes in to the Hospital, big or small, costs money to treat. As a not-for-profit, the Hospital relies on donations to keep caring for wildlife like this little one. If you’d like to help, you can donate through the link in bio.

This Common Ringtail Possum was found at a dog park in Ormeau while being attacked by birds.

The Possum is now in care at the Hospital, where the team is changing the bandage on its injured tail every two to three days and managing its pain while it recovers. It will stay with the Hospital team until it's ready to be released back into the wild.

Every animal that comes through the Hospital doors needs treatment, medication and ongoing care to get back on its feet. If you're able to spare a little, you can donate via the link in bio to help patients like this little one.

Keep your eyes peeled around Elanora and Burleigh, because these brand new personalised Koala crossing signs are popping up!

Each one has the name of a real local Koala who lives in the area and crosses these roads, like Bing B**g, Gum Nut, Willa, Bamse and Kindi.

Far too many Koalas are hit by cars, so when you see a sign, slow down and watch out for wildlife.

Spot them along Guineas Creek Road, West Burleigh Road and Tallebudgera Connection Road, with plenty more on the way.

Aren't these two just the sweetest 🐨💚

We are currently right in the middle of Koala breeding season, which means male Koalas are more active than usual, calling out and travelling further to find a mate. That means more Koalas on the ground and on the move, which is exactly why this time of year sees a rise in vehicle strikes and dog attacks.

So if you're out and about, especially between dusk and dawn, keep an eye out and slow down where Koalas are known to be around and please keep pets indoors at night.

It's almost back to the wild for this Tawny Frogmouth.

A flight test to check strength and bloods to check internal health assesses a bird's readiness to be released back home to the wild.

Did you know Tawny Frogmouths are often mistaken for owls, but they are a completely different species? Their grey, mottled feathers act as perfect camouflage, letting them blend right into the trees during the day.

Happy Vet Nurse Day to the incredible nurses at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital 💚

They're there through the early mornings and the long nights. Feeding orphaned Koala Joeys around the clock. Being the first to help when injured animals arrive. Stabilising patients in critical condition and helping them through surgery and recovery.

For so many animals, a vet nurse is the reason they get a second chance at life.

No matter how big or small the patient, they do everything in their power to give each animal another chance.

It takes skill, patience and so much heart. Australian wildlife simply wouldn't have the same chance without vet nurses.
