This Mother’s Day, I did something a little different with the new ChatGPT Images 2.0 feature…

I used childhood photos of me and my mom to recreate memories from our trips to the old outdoor Santa Monica Mall in the 1970s. ❤️

The bakery stop for my peanut butter cookie with the little fork marks across the top…

Her favorite Mexican restaurant with the red plastic chip baskets and those classic swirly plastic restaurant glasses…

Even visits to my pediatrician, Dr. Levy, whose office was located right there at the mall.
And honestly? I didn’t expect this experiment to feel so emotional.

These weren’t “fake memories.”

They were visual recreations inspired by real moments, real places, and real family stories that have lived in my head for decades.

As genealogists and family historians, we often focus on restoring photographs…

But what about the memories that were never photographed at all?

This may be one of the most fascinating new AI use cases yet for family history storytelling, memory preservation, and genealogy.
