Australia faces a national emergency of violence against women and girls. This violence is driven by gender inequality: the attitudes, behaviours and social norms that excuse, minimise or disrespect women.

Young people’s attitudes are being shaped by exposure to misogynistic attitudes, content and commentary. To change this, we need to make it clear that misogyny and violence against women and girls is unacceptable.

At headspace, we acknowledge victim-survivors of sexual assault and violence. To anyone who has experienced sexual harm, we believe you. We recognise the courage it takes to talk with someone and seek support. The responsibility for harm always sits with the person causing it, never with the victim-survivor. We condemn perpetrators of sexual violence, and anyone who minimises, excuses or ignores it.

Young people are watching how adults, institutions and communities respond when sexual violence is spoken about and reported. They notice when harm is taken seriously, and when it is dismissed, minimised or excused. These responses shape how young people learn about consent, accountability and safety.

As a society we have a responsibility to teach and model consent and respect, challenge misogyny and harmful attitudes, and create the conditions for young people to hold themselves and their peers accountable. We need to create environments where victim-survivors feel safe to disclose harm, are believed and supported when they do, and are never blamed for violence they have experienced.

Challenging misogyny also matters for boys and young men, who are harmed by the narrow expectations, world views and behaviours it reinforces. It also matters to anyone who is concerned about their friends’ attitudes and behaviours, or anyone who has witnessed sexual violence and harm being perpetrated.

For those who have experienced trauma, violence or sexual harm, the current media coverage may be overwhelming. Exposure to these stories can evoke feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, sadness or helplessness.

For any young person experiencing stress, distress or mental ill-health as a result of sexual violence or the recent media stories, headspace is here for you.

It’s always a privilege to spend time with our local Elders connecting with youth, meeting new mates, share a yarn and get creative together through crafts and DJing. Gathering around the table for a BBQ lunch creates space for meaningful conversations about our individual journeys, the changes we’ve experienced and the stories that shape our local community.

Celebrating NAIDOC Week at Bellingen High School

Bellingen High School celebrated NAIDOC Week by recognising and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and achievements. Students and staff took part in activities that encouraged learning, respect and connection.

We honoured Elders past and present for their knowledge and leadership and celebrated the next generation who will continue to share and strengthen culture into the future.

at Brelsford Park was a great success today. A huge thank you to all the organisations that came together to make it happen. It was fantastic to have a yarn, connect with our local community and discuss the issue of homelessness and the support available. For many young people, homelessness and housing insecurity can significantly affect their mental health, sense of belonging and ability to thrive.

Special thanks to Mayor Nikki Williams - Coffs Harbour and MC/DJ Jesse from Mission Australia for leading these important conversations and helping raise awareness of the challenges and solutions within our community. 💚

What I love most about my community engagement role is the opportunity to create something from nothing. There’s something special about improvising, trusting your intuition, and collaborating with others to bring ideas to life while genuinely having fun in the process.
