We wish Watipa Kumwenda all the best this week as she awaits news of university admissions in Malawi (a nerve wrecking process that many of us can remember from when we were students!).

Watipa Kumwenda has already accomplished a lot, having graduated secondary school in 2025. She says that:

"After I finish my tertiary education I would like to help my society as Watipa did for me and most importantly I want to contribute to the growth of girls who are empowered in education."

She continues to inspire us every day.... good luck!

"I discovered that true progress comes from self-motivation. While the success of others can inspire us, real change begins when we believe in ourselves and keep moving forward, even when external encouragement is absent."

Moments of Hope - by Ndaona Maluwa
2025 Graduate: Bachelor in Chemical Engineering, with honours

When I first received the Watipa scholarship, I didn’t just see it as financial support , it quickly became a beacon of hope, encouragement, and transformation in my life. It lifted the heavy burden of school fees and daily worries, giving me the freedom to fully focus on my studies and believe that my dreams were truly within reach. Beyond those practical benefits, it connected me to a family a family of trustees, alumni, and fellow scholars who inspire, guide, and support one another. This scholarship hasn’t just shaped my education; it has strengthened my confidence, revealed my potential, and reminded me that when someone believes in you, you can achieve far more than you ever imagined.

Throughout my studies, I have learnt something vital that failure is not the end, but a stepping stone to growth and discovery. Each setback pushed me to explore new approaches, uncover my true potential, and find better ways to achieve my goals. I also realized the power of consistency that small, daily efforts of showing up, giving my best, and persevering through difficulties eventually build something far greater than I could ever imagine. But most importantly, I discovered that true progress comes from self-motivation. While the success of others can inspire us, real change begins when we believe in ourselves and keep moving forward, even when external encouragement is absent.

As I step into the next phase of my career, I look forward to being part of innovations and contributing to solving complex problems through practical and creative engineering solutions.

I hope to make a meaningful impact in my community by giving back through the knowledge and opportunities I’ve gained. I want to use my engineering background to find practical solutions to everyday challenges . I also want to help create environments where others can grow, learn, and reach their full potential whether through mentorship, teamwork, or community projects. I believe that empowering others multiplies impact and builds a stronger, more capable generation.

To all future scholars, my message is simple: believe in yourself and stay consistent. There will be challenges, but remember, those challenges are shaping you into the person you are meant to become. Use every opportunity you receive wisely learn, grow, and give back. And never forget that you are part of a beautiful Watipa family that believes in you and wants to see you succeed.

Watipa stands for human rights for all. We stand against any form of physical or emotional violence, including war, terrorism, oppression, threats, antisemitism and/or racism.

We stand with the helpers and the heroes who act and speak out against injustice. We stand together with communities, in all our colours and beliefs and hopes for a better and fairer future. Values of inclusion and respect run deep throughout our history and ways of working.

Let us light candles and let light shine brightly over the dark of the events in Bondi Beach, Australia. Our thoughts are with the communities directly affected, and our thanks are with the heroes, helpers and emergency services who responded so courageously.

Let the light connect us as we find togetherness for a brighter future.

Wow Coffs Harbour - what an event!

We came together for Watipa's "Moments of Choice" exhbition to listen, learn, and be moved by stories, drawings, music and conversation about our hopes for person-centred healthcare in our region. This was made possible from the passion, grit and determination of a small and mighty team, dedication and openness to participate from service users and providers in our community, as well as support from the Coffs Harbour City Council and a community grant from ViiV Healthcare.

We were thrilled with the awesome turnout from across our community, fabulous panel, great music and positive vibes. Excited for the next steps, updates to follow...

Some highlights:
~ “Person centred care is the opposite of service centred care, where people are having to contort around the structures of the service.”
~ “Accessibility might be perceived as just being a need for a small minority, but it actually helps everyone.”
~ “We need to meet this person half way for them to feel really safe to be themselves and be honest with what might be happening for them. That leads to better health outcomes – if they can really turn up and be respected and truly be themselves.”
~ “It’s important to understand the person before you try to understand the health problem.”

And so so so much more.... watch this space...

Proud to partner with National AIDS Trust to update this incredible useful source of accurate data about HIV in the UK. is an interactive mapping tool that visualises the impact of the HIV epidemic on communities across England. The tool enables a a closer look at the data available for the whole of England, or search for a region or local authority, and also by key themes such as quality of life of people living with HIV, and stigma experienced, as well as the latest public health data available about testing rate, viral suppression and retention in care... and much more.

Thank you to the hard working team powering this project. The strong collaboration has made it possible to make even more accessible, searchable and interactive the latest publicly available data from the UK Health Security Agency.

As always, is a day of commemoration about lives lost too soon and structural processes that marginalise and persecute, as well as celebration for how far we have come... through scientific progress, community leadership, and collaboration between sectors. The HIV Lens collaboration, and the latest update live today, is an example of the latter and one worth celebrating.

You can either take a closer look at the data available for the whole of England, or search another region or local authority.
