Blacksmithing is back for 2026 at Merri Community Shed !
Cath and Andrew tried their hand at this ancient craft tonight. Andrew made a lovely S hook with a brass brushed twist and Cath opted to make a J hook to bolt to the wall to hang potplants on, again with a lovely brass brushed twist. Welcome to our two newest blacksmiths!
We have some great news in the world of the Merri Forge!
1) We have a new blackmith on board, Phil Liu, who will begin taking starter sessions in conjunction with our resident blacksmith Meghan Street in the near future.
2) Our new anvil from BSL has arrived! It will take some time to set it up, but eventually we will have two anvils available, so more opportunity for members to use the forge. We have also had a delivery of tools including various hardy tools, drifts and hammers.
3) Now that we have two blacksmiths undertaking the teaching and supervising, we will be able to open up the Merri Forge for general forging sessions open to any members who have undertaken the starter sessions. This would mean members can undertake their own projects under supervision and assistance. Dates for general forging sessions are still to be finalised.
4) This is still in the works, but this year we plan on having some focused blacksmithing courses. These will be reasonably priced and open to any member who has attended a starter session. Again these are yet to be finalised, but keep an eye out for annoucements on the coming months!
