Soap Aid To reduce environmental degradation through soap recycling and save the lives of disadvantaged kids by provision of free soap & hygiene education.

Soap Aid is a not-for-profit organisation founded in Australia by a Melbourne family which has had a 30 year involvement in the hotel amenities supply business. The CEO, Michael Matulick, set about improving the sustainability credentials of the business some 5 years ago. During this process, he was inspired to completely reduce their commercial impact on the environment - namely to reduce waste a

nd landfill levels in Australia. He quickly discovered the “trash” could be converted into a treasure that could save lives domestically and globally. Soap Aid is governed by a board of professional volunteers and relies heavily on the pro bono support of commercial partners and volunteers to maintain and grow the Soap Aid program.

We are proud to shine a spotlight on Astro Hospitality, a valued partner helping Soap Aid extend our impact across New Zealand.

Behind every bar of recycled soap distributed is a network of dedicated partners who help make our work possible. Astro Hospitality plays an important role by supporting our logistics, storage and stockpiling needs, ensuring our lifesaving Hotel to Hands soap recycling programme runs smoothly for our New Zealand Soap Aid Champions.

Their support strengthens our ability to support vulnerable communities with a supply of free recycled soap, while advancing our mission of improving hygiene access and reducing waste going to local landfills.

💙 A simple bar of soap can provide more than hygiene. It can provide dignity, comfort and care.

Recently, Soap Aid donated recycled soap bars to Elizabeth Morgan House, supporting women and children experiencing family violence with access to essential hygiene supplies.

For families rebuilding their lives, everyday items like soap can make a meaningful difference. We are proud that soap collected from our accommodation partners is helping support organisations like Elizabeth Morgan House and the incredible work they do in our community.

🥗 Germs spread quickly in kitchens - especially when hands aren’t washed properly.

A recent national survey showed 43% of men and 49% of women in Australia don’t always wash their hands before handling food (Food Safety Information Council, 2025)

This behaviour contributes to cross contamination risks from bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli, which are common causes of foodborne illness in both Australia and New Zealand.

🌏More than 92,000 bars of Soap Aid soap have been distributed in Laos through our partnership with Good Neighbours Australia, reaching local schools and village health centres with essential hygiene supplies. 💙

Together, we are helping improve health, dignity and wellbeing for children and families in rural and isolated communities.

As shared by the District Education and Sport Office in Laos:
"The District Education and Sport Office would like to express its sincere appreciation for providing support to vulnerable families in Muen District through the distribution of Days for Girls Australia menstrual health kits, SolarBuddy lights, Wrap With Love blankets, and Soap Aid bars, which have greatly benefited our local residents."

Studies show that 20–25% of bulk refillable soap dispensers become heavily contaminated, with some samples containing over one million bacteria per millilitre.

Using contaminated soap can actually increase the bacteria on your hands instead of reducing it, with research showing a 26 fold increase in Gram negative bacteria after washing with contaminated liquid soap.
