Lake Macquarie has a proud mining history and, as a result, contains large areas of current and former mined land that will play a significant role in the future prosperity of the LGA. The city already has strong examples of beneficial reuse of former mine land, from projects such as BlackRock Motor Park at the former Rhondda Colliery, to major housing developments at Catherine Hill Bay, Redhead and Belmont. The Fernleigh Track is another example, having been established along a former coal rail corridor.
Together, these projects demonstrate how post-mining land transition can create lasting economic and community value.
Dantia advocates for the beneficial reuse of former mine sites to unlock employment-generating land, attract investment and maximise the value of existing infrastructure. This approach supports sustainable economic development, helps diversify the local economy and creates new opportunities for future generations.
