And that's a wrap on another epic weekend with chapter members spanning far and wide to meet on the Upper Richmond River, NSW.

It kicked off with a yarn from Githabul man - David Welsh, followed by riverbank tree planting, a Pimp My Jetty construction demo, and finishing the day with water bugs as ratings for water health with Brendan Cox and Richmond Riverkeeper. To top it off, we mastered plant ID whilst wandering through a riparian zone and remnant within the Border Rangers. 🌳

New friendships were formed, even after some healthy competition during our trivia and carp comp with some winners taking away some great little prizes. 🎣

Help us find our next award winner!

Nominations are officially OPEN for the 2026 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards!

We all know an OzFisher who goes above and beyond, the person leading the charge at every workshop or assisting others learn more about our fisheries. Now is the time to give them a shout-out.

Why get involved? Last year, the OzFish Murray-Darling Basin Program took home the NSW Volunteer Team of the Year award! We know the impact our community has on waterways, and we want to keep that momentum going.

Every nominee is recognized with a certificate and an invitation to a regional ceremony and it's the perfect way to say "thanks for all you do."

What a turn out for our follow up planting day on Boomerang Creek on Saturday 😍

30 people showed up in the hot sun and got 1050 native trees and grasses in the ground in record time, with a well-deserved creek dip to follow! 🐟

This brings us to 2500+ natives on this site, and another 500+ just upstream on a neighboring property as part of the City Council Rural Landholder Initiative project - Bass and Biodiversity 🌱

Thanks to the OzFisher's, Landholders of Boomerang Creek, Landcarer's, RiverRunners, Friends and Family that showed up for fish habitat this weekend πŸ‘

Thankyou to the 25 volunteers that turned up to give us a hand to get a huge 1400+ trees in the ground! It was a big morning, but what a success for Teven Memorial Park. This is what it’s all about - the community working together to restore the catchment, one section at a time 🌱🐟

And a special thankyou to Ballina Shire Council, Tuckombil Landcare Group, Richmond Landcare Incorporated, Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council, and Back to Bushland for collaboratively making this planting happen!

Thanks to everyone who joined the Richmond Chapter’s final event of the year β€” celebrating the launch of Rex the River Repair Boat. It was wonderful to reflect on what has been a massive year in the Richmond and get excited for what's to come in 2026 with Rex by our side! πŸ₯³

And an even bigger THANK YOU to everyone that showed up for fish habitat this year 🐟 whether you joined us for a tree planting, helped with the fish kill response, came along to a clean-up, got out in the saltmarsh, helped us build oyster reefs or helped fight for the health of the Richmond - every little bit counts! 🌱

Despite the challenging year following the devastation of the fish kills, you all helped achieve some epic outcomes in the 25/26 FY:
-2,839 volunteer hours ✊
-1,700 native plants in the ground 🌱
-500 kg of rubbish removed from Richmond waterways πŸ™Œ

Here’s to community, collaboration, and healthier rivers β€” and to another strong year ahead for the Richmond Chapter πŸŸπŸ’™

North Coast Project Officer Erica captured some fantastic drone shots of the Boomerang Creek planting in late October. An amazing crew of volunteers helped get 1,500 native trees and plants in the ground, boosting fish habitat and reconnecting the riparian zone. A huge thank you to everyone who came out and got their hands dirty!
