Today, May 28th is LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Day. Created in Australia during 2020 this day is the first time in history that an awareness day was formed to highlight domestic, family and intimate partner violence and abuse occurring in LGBTQ+ communities.
1 in 2 LGBTQ people will experience Domestic or Family Violence in their lifetime, yet reporting rates are incredibly low, only 3 in 10 LGBTQ people who have experienced Domestic or Family Violence have told someone about it. To empower them to report, they must be
Please check out the LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation where you can learn more about what violence and abuse looks like in LGBTQIA+ relationships, how to support people experiencing it and make a pledge to help change the conversation around domestic, family and intimate partner violence and abuse.

The East Gippsland H.E.Y Project is ALL IN for Reconciliation, not just this week but every day!
We are committed to working with and alongside First Nations young people and community and understand our part in doing the work to make meaningful reconciliation a possibility in our community and country. 🖤💛❤️

From Reconciliation Australia:
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The campaign was created in collaboration with Carbon Creative, a First Nations-owned and operated marketing and creative agency.
The artwork for this campaign is by renowned Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung artist Otis Hope Carey, who applied his distinctive style to create a colourful and optimistic visual representation of people from all walks of life being ‘all in’ to make change.

National Sorry Day matters, but sorry without action is not enough!

29 years on from the Bringing Them Home report, only 6% of recommendations have been fully implemented (yep… only 6%. Let that sink in 🤯).

This year’s theme, From Sorry to Action, is a reminder that reflection matters, but action matters too!

Today, we acknowledge the Stolen Generations - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families, communities and culture and recognise the lasting impacts that continue across generations.

We honour the strength, resilience and advocacy of Stolen Generations Survivors, while recognising that many who shared their stories and experiences are no longer with us. Others are ageing, and time is running out to see long-awaited justice and change.

We believe cultural safety, respect and healing require more than good intentions. They require ongoing learning, partnership, accountability and, most of all, action! Because healing cannot wait another generation.

Sorry should never be the end of the conversation 🖤💛❤️

It was an honour to be part of this flag raising! The leadership of the Youth Ambassadors is a powerful testament to the young people in our community, and the allyship of staff from each organisation was very heartwarming on that chilly autumn morning

Ahead of IDAHOBIT – the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia – on Sunday 17 May, we came together to raise the rainbow flag and recognise the importance of inclusion, respect and belonging.

Staff from East Gippsland Shire Council, Gippsland Lakes Complete Health (GLCH), Uniting, Victoria Police, our Youth Ambassadors and James Bush from GLCH’s H.E.Y (Healthy Equal Youth) Project joined together in solidarity with our LGBTQIA+ community.

IDAHOBIT serves as an important reminder that discrimination and exclusion continue to affect many LGBTQIA+ people in their daily lives.

By raising the flag, we are reinforcing our shared commitment to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive community for all.
We proudly stand alongside our LGBTQIA+ community and remain committed to respect, equity and inclusion every day of the year.
