❤️ Today is World Heart Day.
Cardiovascular disease often develops silently, long before symptoms appear. Cardiovascular radiology gives us the opportunity to see disease earlier, refine individual risk and support more personalised prevention.
From coronary artery calcium assessment to advanced cardiac CT and MRI, imaging is increasingly moving beyond diagnosis alone. It can help identify subclinical disease, guide clinical decision-making and ensure that preventive strategies are better tailored to each patient.

Radiologists therefore have an important role to play in cardiovascular prevention: detecting earlier, communicating imaging findings effectively and helping translate them into better patient care.

At the ESCR, we believe that imaging today can contribute to healthier hearts tomorrow.

❤️ From risk factors to visible disease: let CT personalise prevention.

During , we are reminded that cardiovascular prevention starts before symptoms appear.

Coronary artery disease can remain silent for many years. While traditional risk factors help estimate cardiovascular risk, CT can directly reveal subclinical coronary atherosclerosis and provide a more individualised assessment of risk.

🫀 Coronary artery calcium (CAC) is an established imaging biomarker of atherosclerotic burden. By refining cardiovascular risk beyond conventional risk factors, CAC can support a more personalised preventive strategy helping identify patients who may benefit from more intensive prevention while avoiding unnecessary treatment in those at lower risk.

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ Radiologists have a key role to play in this pathway. Coronary calcifications should not be overlooked, including on chest CT examinations performed for other indications, particularly lung cancer screening. Recognising, reporting and appropriately communicating CAC can turn an imaging finding into an opportunity for cardiovascular prevention without an additional examination or radiation exposure.

At ESCR, we believe cardiovascular imaging can help move prevention from population-based risk estimation towards individualised, imaging-informed care, supporting the ambitions of the EU Safe Hearts Plan.

To further underline the contribution of cardiovascular radiology to cardiovascular health, ESR-ESCR recently introduced this policy briefing at the European Parliament.
