The Khalifa International Date Palm Award was established under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE (May God Protect Him) with presidential decree Number 15/2007, dated 20 March 2007, and through Presidential Decision Number 02/2007, dated 7 July 2007, which defined the members of the Award's Board of Trustees. Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, President of the Board of Trustees, attended the inaugural ceremony of the Khalifa International Date Palm Award held on 7 April 2008 at Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. The inauguration ceremony attracted both regional and international attention to the date palm tree and the strategic future of dates as a balanced food product, and highlighted it as an essential part of the sustainable development process initiated by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE (May God Protect Him)

The award shall consist of a trophy carrying the winner's name, a certificate in the winner's name indicating the award category with the date and a financial reward specified as follows:

First category: Distinguished Research / Studies
AED 300,000 for the First Place Winner plus a trophy & certificate
AED 200,000 for the Second Place Winner plus a trophy & certificate

Second Category: Distinguished Producers
AED 300,000 for the First Place Winner plus a trophy & certificate
AED 200,000 for the Second Place Winner plus a trophy & certificate

Third Category: The Best New Technique
AED 300,000 for the First Place Winner plus a trophy & certificate
AED 200,000 for the Second Place Winner plus a trophy & certificate

Fourth Category: The Best Development Project
AED 300,000 for the First Place Winner plus a trophy & certificate
AED 200,000 for the Second Place Winner plus a trophy & certificate

Fifth Category: Distinguished Figure
