Today, joined Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Wildlife Ambassador, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, who was represented by the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Hon. Daniel Garwe, at Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba, where people gathered for a memorial service to honour the 44 lives lost in the Kariba ferry disaster.

ZimParks extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends and communities affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

We also pay tribute to the Matusadona Conservation Trust (MCT) team, a conservation partnership between ZimParks and African Parks, who were among the first responders at the scene. Their swift response, courage, professionalism and commitment to saving lives reflect the highest spirit of service.

ZimParks stands in solidarity with the bereaved families and the people of Kariba. May the memories of those we lost bring comfort and strength to their loved ones, and may their souls rest in eternal peace.

joins the global community in commemorating 2026, reaffirming its commitment to science-based elephant conservation, sustainable wildlife management, and community-centred coexistence between people and wildlife.

Home to one of Africa’s largest elephant populations, estimated at about 100,000, Zimbabwe continues to invest in protected area management, anti-poaching efforts, ecological monitoring, habitat protection, human-elephant conflict mitigation, and partnerships with communities and conservation stakeholders.

Guided by the Zimbabwe Elephant Management Plan (2026–2036), Zimparks is advancing adaptive, evidence-driven approaches to secure the long-term sustainability of this globally significant species.

As we mark this important day, ZimParks calls for strengthened cooperation to safeguard elephant populations, protect habitats, and ensure conservation delivers lasting benefits for present and future generations.
