Victoria Falls has launched its first-ever Sustainability Monograph
Victoria Falls has taken a major step towards environmental sustainability with the launch of its first-ever Sustainability Monograph. The document outlines key strategies for wetland preservation, emission reduction, renewable energy adoption, sustainable tourism, and climate finance mobilisation.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Director in the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Dr. Washington Zhakata, said the initiative aligns with Zimbabwe’s Paris Agreement commitments and national goal to cut per capita emissions by 40% by 2030.
Town Clerk Mr. Ronnie Dube highlighted the local benefits, including improved service delivery, lower operational costs, investment attraction, and job creation through a greener economy.
Environmental consultant Mr. Anglistone Sibanda added that branding Victoria Falls as a carbon-neutral destination will attract environmentally conscious travellers and boost sustainable tourism.
The Monograph supports National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and SDG 11, positioning Victoria Falls to benefit from global carbon markets following examples like Cape Town, which recently earned over 46 million Rand through carbon credits.
Victoria Falls becomes only the second city in Zimbabwe, after Bulawayo, to adopt such a progressive framework.
